ETFs are buying... Institutions are buying... Who the hell is selling?
2024 brought a mass of commentators looking at ETFs flows, as if that's all that matters. What matters is total demand and supply. Here's a 101 thread on how the modern #Bitcoin market works.
First, let me tell you who is selling. The OGs. They are selling They have more BTC than all the ETFs put together... 10x more. And they sell into every bull market.
We are now in the modern age of BTC. Paper BTC has flooded the market since 2017. Futures markets. If you want to buy BTC, it used to be you had to buy real BTC. You can now buy paper BTC. Thus a no-coiner can sell you that paper. Together you have made a synthetic BTC.
That would-be demand for BTC gets diverted to paper BTC, fulfilled by counter traders who have no BTC to sell, they just have USD to back their bet. In the old days, BTC would go on an exponential run because the only sellers was a trickle from the OGs and an even smaller amount from miners with their newly mined coins. Today the magic of paper BTC is what you want to watch.
The 2022 bear market was dictated by a flood of paper BTC when spot holders didn't really sell. In this current bull, I have marked where paper increased, these were times when price didn't rally. We are in one of these right now.
So... not a great idea to look solely at ETF buying. On-chain data... derivatives data... technical price action... All of these add to the demand and supply picture. Putting it together is an art, not a quantifiable science. Everyone is just making educated guesses.

I got really obsessed with Japanese wood pencils last night and stayed up until 2am researching pencils and pencil accessories.
I went on a wood pencil bender in college too, trying to find the right pencil for me, but there wasn't nearly the same level of variety.

Something I have learned recently: if you subtract all the noise, there are really not many things worth paying attention to.
The hard part is how to trace out the sources or at least getting closer.
reply
I guess that's our challenge in modern society: filter out what really matters. But I think, with each good source we find, we get better at recognizing other good things later.

Hello! I have a question, are you also paying 11 sats for each comment that has a photo? It's been happening to me since yesterday. If I put 2 photos then there are 21 sats and so on and in the posts too, the more photos the more sats. It is the first time that it happens to me. Did they change anything in SN?
reply
IIRC when @ek added the support to upload an image to SN, you do get charged for it. Can you confirm, ek?
reply
50MB are free per 24 hours, after that it's 10 sats per image until 75MB, then 100 sats until 100MB, then 1k sats.
@bief57, looks like you hit the 50MB limit with this post and other pictures in the last 24 hours.
We set the limit to 50MB in February since that looked reasonable but we can probably increase it.
reply
Nice, thank you for this detailed explanation!
Is the 24 hour window rolling? Is this fee rate documented anywhere?
reply
Yes, it's a rolling window.

Mhh, not really 👀 I can add it to the FAQ.

Am I supposed to care about Juneteenth?
reply
You don't have to, but you are welcome. We've celebrated without others for over a century. Black people want the freedom to do our thing. But whatever we do, it seems the larger culture likes to absorb, appropriate, and exploit. So do feel ok about not caring. You are welcome to join celebrations or just enjoy a paid day off. I'll ask you to not shit on it, though. If that is your intent. But he'll it's a free country. You can do that, too!
reply
Nah never had the intent to shit on anything. It’s just a legitimate question. Growing up I never celebrated it or even knew it was a thing. Now it’s an official holiday I’m asking should I go to these events that my local area is putting on
reply
If you like cultural festivals with food, music, art, and history, go.
reply
It may have been elevated to federal holiday status as a woke virtue signal, but if people look up what it actually is, it's hard to argue that it isn't commemorating something important.
What are the staples of traditional Juneteenth celebrations?
reply
It started in Texas, so BBQ, music, dancing. Red things, including decorations, food and drink (honors the blood of the ancestors), so red drink (sodas, etc.) red velvet cake and watermelon. There is a historical component where there the telling of family freedom history and stories.
Many communities now have festivals. Find one and enjoy! The one in Oakland, CA is huge and has gone on for decades as lots of Texans migrated there.
reply
Thanks. BBQ's never a hard sell for me. Between Fathers Day and Juneteenth, this is quite a BBQ week!

I could be wrong, but it seems art is a continuation of each civilization. They might be coming to an end, but the art is still going on, being improved by later generations, e.g., I can clearly see that some patterns are passed down from here, but here probably not the sources too.
reply
Art is the highest manifestation of a culture.
The first art was body art, dance, song… then its a representation and celebration of life and its struggles (hunting scenes) in the sanctuary of natural caves and then finally art within architectural wonders and showing geometric shapes and perspectives of human design. Each example builds on the other but it’s never truly bettered.. just maintained and evolved.
The library at Alexandria, its papyrus secrets, was a classic centralisation of knowledge, vulnerable to attack…. In contrast traditional communities may by forgotten but their influence echoes through eternity.
Maybe Bitcoin is higher art..
reply

and then each culture is interconnected, I can't tell you how much so-called Turkish art is "learned" from others 😂 but indeed it got maintained and evolved here.

Barratry

The word barratry was first used within Admiralty law and means “misconduct by crew of a ship resulting in its damage”. However, within Common Law it means “litigation for the purpose of harassment or profit”.
If an employee working for a corporation should initiate litigation against you, without a contract, then they have committed barratry, and if said corporation is “for-profit” then the employee has done so for financial gain.
Until the year 1888 barratry was a capital offence, and, although it is still punishable by imprisonment today, fines are usually paid.

sharing my thoughts on the cowboy hat
how about making your work so great that you don't need to have a hat to be remembered or stand out; enjoy being around when you feel like to instead of being forced to be around every day. 🤔
POW > hat.
reply
I have lost mine today after 33 days. Just a bad day yesterday.
reply
How do you feel about it? I guess the correct response would be oh well, no big deal. I think the longer you have been on SN, and the greater your commitment, the more this stuff matters.
reply
No problems, I understand that I was disconnected yesterday. It’s impossible to be online everyday.
reply
You are emotionally healthy, unlike some of us😀
reply
Yeah, just ok. By the way , just founded again the hat!! 🤣
reply
Cowboy hat = how much you are active on SN.. Just that.
reply
But the hat only shows you the tip of the iceberg, like the news - do you think that's all happening? 👀
reply
@elvismercury was talking about the stress of maintaining or losing his hat recently. Collectivly we give it meaning, though it's sort of meaningless.
reply
exactly!
reply
Are we starting a revolution?
reply
Did you hide your hat?
reply
What hat? Seriously, I hide everything right now. I'm talking about how meaningless a hat is, but I still value it. I'm trying to convince myself. Maybe valueless is going too far. It does recognize a certain commitment to SN, I guess.
reply
I'm not saying that you have a hat, or that you've had one longer than anyone else, but if you did have a hat, would you be able to see it while hiding it from others?
reply
Lol are you asking for a friend?
To each their own. The hat signifies your own journey.
reply
Yes. Really what I have been thinking about is, I guess depending on your personality, these types of things can gain importance which is illogical, disproportionate, and maybe unhealthy. I'm suspectible to this😀
hahah, since last year? a silent revolution 😂
be the change! and ppl should't feel bad about losing an imaginary hat.
reply
I don't understand why the hat should force someone to come here. Is it so important?
reply
I mentioned yesterday that it reminds me of a corporate job where there is some kind of fake status or award that provides no tangible benefit but everyone wants. It's given meaning by the culture.
reply
It's a good analogy. The hat only costs a few minutes a day and 100 sats. 🤠
reply
and an unpeaceful mind when you find out you forgot to maintain it or lost it.
but anyways, maybe I should STFU, ppl are free to choose whatever game they want to play.
