It may have been elevated to federal holiday status as a woke virtue signal, but if people look up what it actually is, it's hard to argue that it isn't commemorating something important.

It started in Texas, so BBQ, music, dancing. Red things, including decorations, food and drink (honors the blood of the ancestors), so red drink (sodas, etc.) red velvet cake and watermelon. There is a historical component where there the telling of family freedom history and stories.
Many communities now have festivals. Find one and enjoy! The one in Oakland, CA is huge and has gone on for decades as lots of Texans migrated there.
