hey, 1 million is a lot of items!

Since #92827 I have turned to this site to find information, discuss the myriad ways that bitcoin changes the world, supply some of my own fleeting insight, and generally share my life alongside you. It's been a pleasure, really. To me, SN is a refuge from social media warfare and those obscure algorithm demons.

Is 1 million items an important milestone?

In much the same docile and quiet way that the bitcoin network begat block 900,000 last week, SN as a collective of participating users hit item #1000000 without much ado. And this is not to say I don't appreciate that post and all the cheery comments and memes, that was certainly fun. But my point, I guess, is that there are a few ghosts in that post and in those that have followed who haven't said anything, and I take the silence as dismissal. So perhaps, an extra character for every post from now on indefinitely doesn't mean much. Perhaps the numerical value we assign to these unimportant but briefly entertaining text boxes can only be void next to the sat value they may or may not collect. And that is as it should be, surely, and by design.
Still, I'm thinking, aren't we going somewhere with all this? And doesn't 1 million mean we're close to getting there?
I'm not convinced of its significance, but I'm biased to think that the number going up is a signal to pay attention to (since I've heard that idea repeated something like 1 million times).
To the others who have been here for a certain amount of time, who have been contributing meaningfully and faithfully stacking, do you care about 1 million items?

Put simply, I am asking, what does it mean?

If anything, 1 million items means growth. If nothing, then I begin to ask a list of abstract questions that begin with "Why?"
There aren't many other social websites that have a built in connection to this particular numeric. It comes up often in your experience of using SN, and I'm only saying this is unique and special. Therefore, shall we look at it a moment? Shall we take a pause and reflect? What was your first post, what were you thinking then about how to use SN and how has it changed?
It's the second "extra character" that you and I have experienced. The first four were before our time.
#1 (6/11//21)
#10 (6/11/21)
#100 (6/27/21)
#1000 (8/12/21)
#10000 (2/8/22)
#100000 (11/28/22)
#1000000 (6/7/25)
We might not get another extra character this decade.

When my daughter turned 10 I told her we're now the same, we're both double digits.

I'm going to try to remember to use this when the time comes

That's adorable

wdym what's wrong? 10,000 to 100,000 in the same year

Timezones? It must have already been tomorrow for you.

With #100000, it's probably the timezone thing (UTC 3:02... so it's still yesterday in the States), but for #10000, you probably just fat fingered it, swapping a 3 for an 8. Time for some glasses or less screen time! Ahahah

Ah yes, more likely an eyesight issue than a dexterity one.

thanks that's an important note!

I think symbolic numbers have significance. I'm actually someone who's inclined to think the other way (birthdays don't mean anything, etc.)... so I have to actively remind myself that symbolism matters to people, and if matters to people it should matter to me.
Mostly, though, I just want to do cool things, and I thought making the 1,000,000th item a meta post about the 1,000,000th item would be pretty cool.

I'm glad you did!

for real, on the real tho, really really, I'm just asking, where is this energy: #100192
maybe I just missed it

here is the energy: #1000000
(oh i see you linked to it already)

1 million is just a number, but getting here feels like signal. SN’s still small enough to care and weird enough to matter.🧡
reply
A million items? That’s nothing. This is what really matters.
And honestly, things aren’t looking great.
reply
huh interesting, do you have any meta interpretations of this data?

the product is confusing and too hard to use
also whatever churn we have is not replenished because we have no active growth initiatives
while i dont mind letting folks indulge in the bearishness, these graphs also makes things look worse than it is. what we have is a few dips correlated to wallet announcements/introductions and plateaus.

One simple change will drive much more posts in my opinion:
the post button always visible in all and any page...

Some of what appear to be significant declines were associated with purges of bots and ass-milkers and are therefore not really indicative of a decline in SN.
That said, there has been a noticeable slowdown in real engagement. I mostly attribute that to a small number of formerly prominent stackers cutting back dramatically.

Like Rsync?
reply
No. I'm thinking of the decision to cap the number of rewards recipients and charging fees at all.

we have a few large development things going on atm, but once they're over reducing the product complexity is what I'll be primarily focused on.
reply
Perhaps it is overly complex, I'm receptive to the idea, sure. But it does in some sense point back to a frustration I get with ux guys insisting that their users are stupid and must be placated. It feels good to earn rewards from a relatively complex thing.
reply
Yes, we can expect people to have a higher tolerance for complexity given they’re sometimes rewarded. But, it’s safe to assume that people don’t want complexity where it doesn’t serve a purpose.
how do you know that the issue is product complexity?
That being said, it's been a while since I've had the new user experience. Maybe I should try it out and see if I have any feedback.

i don't know for sure that that's the issue. for good or bad, i believe i have pretty good intuition about product complexity, so I am confident the product is too complex. Whether that is affecting growth or not is not something i know but it would turn me off as a new stacker.

If you’re asking why this is happening, my answer is: no!
