hey, 1 million is a lot of items!
Since #92827 I have turned to this site to find information, discuss the myriad ways that bitcoin changes the world, supply some of my own fleeting insight, and generally share my life alongside you. It's been a pleasure, really. To me, SN is a refuge from social media warfare and those obscure algorithm demons.
Is 1 million items an important milestone?
In much the same docile and quiet way that the bitcoin network begat block 900,000 last week, SN as a collective of participating users hit item #1000000 without much ado. And this is not to say I don't appreciate that post and all the cheery comments and memes, that was certainly fun. But my point, I guess, is that there are a few ghosts in that post and in those that have followed who haven't said anything, and I take the silence as dismissal. So perhaps, an extra character for every post from now on indefinitely doesn't mean much. Perhaps the numerical value we assign to these unimportant but briefly entertaining text boxes can only be void next to the sat value they may or may not collect.
And that is as it should be, surely, and by design.
Still, I'm thinking, aren't we going somewhere with all this? And doesn't 1 million mean we're close to getting there?
I'm not convinced of its significance, but I'm biased to think that the number going up is a signal to pay attention to (since I've heard that idea repeated something like 1 million times).
To the others who have been here for a certain amount of time, who have been contributing meaningfully and faithfully stacking, do you care about 1 million items?
Put simply, I am asking, what does it mean?
If anything, 1 million items means growth.
If nothing, then I begin to ask a list of abstract questions that begin with "Why?"
There aren't many other social websites that have a built in connection to this particular numeric. It comes up often in your experience of using SN, and I'm only saying this is unique and special. Therefore, shall we look at it a moment? Shall we take a pause and reflect? What was your first post, what were you thinking then about how to use SN and how has it changed?
