Anyone who opts into notifications for new territories.

When we launched territories, there was a lot of discussion how to "alert" about new territories.

But isn't a notification the most obvious idea? But somehow, it didn't come to me until yesterday thanks to the bug, lol. I thought someone should just write a bot that posts into ~meta or something.

reply

It's an interesting idea, but personally I don't feel the need to be notified. But if it's an opt in, why not?

I certainly would opt in to a "notify me when a territory is founded or archived."

I know this is completely out of left field, but has anyone ever heard of this tragedy from 1959? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyatlov_Pass_incident

Crazy story. I have limited media entertainment sources on the ship, and watched an episode about this on the Discovery Network.

reply

Yup -- it's absolutely fascinating. I only heard about it a year or two back because You're Wrong About had a great episode with Blair Braverman that went into the story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQFw32uZLvg&list=PL3AQlUaEy3QL4ghqypSNbF3WQx_u2m7mL&index=10

reply

The avalanche theory makes sense to me, especially after seeing it on the Discovery Channel, but you never know for sure.

reply

I agree, but that letter showing the investigation began a week earlier than the supposed discovery does raise questions.

reply

the story as we know it was so distorted by the communist disinformation dept that we can't be sure of anything. They always add more deceitful info to move people's attention on a false path.

reply

That's why I say we'll never know for sure. One thing I do know is that people love a good conspiracy theory and a juicy investigative story. This case is just another one that piques people's curiosity. And coming from Russia, well, we know how that goes...

reply

Yes, there's also a movie about. Is good.

reply

There seems to have been some government cover-up (surprise!) and many possibilities.

reply

The gov coverup it is expected. Remember that was during the peak of the communist regime in URSS and these kind of events they were always trying to coverup with more lies. The communist regimes had a powerful propaganda and disinformation machine. Sometimes the members of this machine are so obedient and scrupulous in doing their job, that even go way beyond the instructions they receive, looking only for theirown personal goals to climb the ladder in the party for a better position that could bring them more privileges. Let me search for that movie and will post here the link. Is really good.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1905040

reply

I definitely want to see the movie. Maybe it's a case of the government just covering up because that's how they operate, when there was really nothing to cover up. On the other hand, the missile fragment and the high radiation levels are interesting.

I used to like dark colored clothes when I was living in big cities. πŸ‘€

reply

Curious. What do you think is the reason for this? Is it to be more in line with our surroundings?

reply

city life is stressful - maybe people want to protect themselves with dark colors or perhaps it reflects their mood?

also it depends on what the market/brands are producing, and most of them are making dark colors.

the conspiracy level is maybe the dark colors are good for causing bad mood, more distance between people thus more sickness, easier to control, and more profit for the hospital? πŸ‘€

reply

This sparked my curiosity, is there any study on this? :) I think it has more to do with each person's mood, but... It would be a hit on the ~charts territory :)

Left school today without doing that one thing I was supposed to: inform my fellow teachers about the inclusion of the Dolch Sight Word List in the student workbook. Gonna do it while sipping my evening coffee πŸ˜…

β€”- Dear colleagues,

Sensei figured out something that baffled him when he was teaching at a primary school.

My student could read words like promised and excited without hesitation, but took two weeks to remember how to pronounce take. I’m extremely baffled, but it is what it is.

Here’s my take: some multisyllabic words are ironically easier to pronounce than single-syllabic words because they contain less sounds per syllable.

This is why words from the Dolch Sight Vocabulary - from Pre-Primer to Third Grade - have been included in the Unit 2 workbook (pg 60-64)

Some ℹ️:

  • 220 words in all
  • Between 50% and 75% of words in printed materials use words from Dolch list
  • Some of these words are phonentically irregular. They can’t be sounded out & must be memorised
  • Some of these words are β€œservice words” (I.e. pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions). So, children can’t use pictures to remember them
  • Fun fact: All words from β€œThe Cat in the Hat” are from the Dolch List

What You Could Do

We would like you to use your discretion and determine if your students would benefit from targetted exposure to the Dolch List. Perhaps you could spend 1 period a week to get students up to speed with it.

Some suggestions for implementation:

  • Pair students up. Have them compete to see who can say the most number of words aloud within 1 min
  • Select homonyms & get students to understand the difference (e.g. β€œwhen” & β€œwent”)
  • Get students to categorise words into present tense or past tense

https://m.stacker.news/22087

  • Revise spelling of sight words deemed difficult for your class

I hope these suggestions are useful & feasible. I believe that students attaining a firmer grasp of sight words will be able to read and write better.

Cheers, KL Sensei

Where do you store all your meat when you camp there? πŸ€” What's in your pack food wise, canned stuff? Nonperishables?

reply

I do not stay many days, especially now in the spring. The longest stay was 2 weeks. Then I go back to refill for 2-3 days and again 1-2weeks. Depending on how is the weather. So yes sometimes I take some freeze meat with me for the first 1-2 days. I can keep it in a portable freezer I have there too. But usually I have a stock of canned food, ready meals. Really good and handy. I take also fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, salami etc. I do not eat a lot, I prefer more nuts, cashu, almonds. And lots of beers :)

So yeah when I go, my backpack is like 20kg that I carry it like 8km through the forest trail.

at least 14 cans. Sometimes I go back to my car and reload if I stay longer.

correct! but then how can you know what's more interesting if you don't open and have a look in the first place?

reply

It's quite simple.

  • what you didn't finish until now but is not affecting your regular life, it is not important, so you can put it on a "parked" mode.
  • what you feel you need it "now" is what you focus.

Life goes on and usually people are struggling to make "priorities" from nothing. Just let the life and instinct telling you what you need in that moment. Is much fun. Don't worry, be happy.
