I know we have plenty of San Fran fans here at Stacker Sports so what is halls take on this? While Purdy has been good and has dramatically outperformed what people thought he would do if he is a systems QB like a lot of people seem to say how much is that worth to the 49ers?
Dak really skewed the market for everyone in the QB space and we are seeing he isn't a $60 mil a year guy and might not even be a $50 mil a year guy depending on how he bounces back next year.
Since Purdy has only made $3 mil in the NFL so far does he sign a Jordan Love like contract or does he aim for higher in hopes of landing between say a Joe Burrow guarantee and a Jordan Love contract?
This article is all speculation. "if Purdy asks for top dollar the 49ers could balk" if he asks for less "they might be willing".
Purdy will get extended. The number will look stupid at first but when you dig into the contract details I expect the cap hits, guaranteed money and outs will make it a sustainable contract for the Niners.
If I am the 49ers I sign Purdy. I don't care if it's 60M AAV but the early cap hits, guaranteed money and outs need to be team friendly. Then every draft I would be using late round picks to swing on bigger, stronger, faster QBs that are raw. Always be trying to get someone that could develop into a top 5 guy. I don't think Purdy is that. The system can make him look like a top 5 guy but he is a top 10 guy at best.

How much will Darnold get? He will be the benchmark for Purdy

You think someone is going to sign Sam long term? I thought he might get another 1yr or maybe a 2yr deal.
reply
I think Minnesota will offer him a 2 year deal but not top of market
40 million per year
reply
I could see him do a 1 year at 40mil but I think if someone wants him longer then he's going to want a 4 year maybe 180ish.
I could see someone like Seattle or Tennessee or Indy throw that type of money at him
reply
That would be a good deal for both parties. Purdy will get more than that.

I realized that more as I read it. I thought there was more to it substance-wise then there ended up being but I figured it would lead to some interesting conversations. A friend of mine and I were actually talking about him last night and at least in Texas the talk is how he is nothing but a system QB and how you could stick a random person from the crowd there and that person would thrive.
My friend wondered that with how meh this QB class is this year if there was a team so desperate that they would trade a boatload of top picks and players to the 49ers for Purdy and Shanahan goes and drafts a new system QB. I don't watch the 49ers much so I have no idea if Purdy is a system QB or not its just what I keep hearing people say
reply
Possible but seems unlikely. I don't think Shanahan wants to start again with a new QB especially with an aging team that probably has to win in the next couple years.
If they can't get a deal done more likely they make him play out his final year and then franchise tag him while they search for his replacement but I think a deal will get done. It suits both parties. 49ers need stability at QB for the next few years (and hopefully longer) and Purdy needs to hit the big pay day in case he turns into a pumpkin. I don't think he will turn into a pumpkin but two elbow injuries now and he wasn't as good this year.
For me, as long as the early year cap hits are low so they can keep a great team around him and as long they have decent outs after 3 or 4 years so if he does turn into a pumpkin they aren't tied to him for 7 or 8, then AAV doesn't really matter. It will get headlines and people will say he isn't worth that much but the structure of the contract is much more important to the team.
reply
He'll certainly aim for higher, but he didn't do anything to help himself down the stretch.

Shanahan sandbagging the season to get Purdy on a cheaper deal is not out of the realm of possibility. I am not saying from the get go but once the injuries started to mount and they knew playoffs were unlikely maybe. They only ran the ball 14 times against the Lions and under 20 the two games before that as well. Shanahan knows the OLine sucks and there is no Aiyuk and CMC. I thought it odd when he played him in the preseason with a bunch of third stringers against he Titans number ones. I was thinking why bother but maybe he was proving a point that in order to keep all his great players with him he needs to sign a team friendly deal.
reply
I am going to give him (Purdy) credit with how the offense itself was a shell of what was expected. CMC was a nonfactor this year lost one of his top WR and the other one has butter fingers so it isn't all his fault the team has melted around him
reply
True. Throwing the ball directly to the other team repeatedly is on him though.

I mean... look at CJ Stroud this year.... I feel like interceptions are up across the league from looking at the NFL leaders but I could be mistaken... I just do not remember seeing the leader having 9 and the entire top 10 having at least 5.

They might as well negotiate- Brock seems like a nice guy and nice guys finish last. They can probably figure out a way to keep him happy without breaking the bank.
reply
I do think that if you present a plan to him with this is where XYZ money is going to go you could get him for cheaper but if not then I'm not sure why he would take less $

True true the weather is nice but the taxes are a bitchhhhhh

Minus home games they are still paying taxes to each state they play in. Diminishes the advantage somewhat.
Brock seems like the kind of gullible nice guy whose local church minister could persuade to not get greedy.
reply
I mean Texas and Flordia… half your games you have zero taxes and then you also play within the state as well… Dallas v Texas Miami v Bucs

for 50 million per year, I will move anywhere.
