This article is all speculation. "if Purdy asks for top dollar the 49ers could balk" if he asks for less "they might be willing".
Purdy will get extended. The number will look stupid at first but when you dig into the contract details I expect the cap hits, guaranteed money and outs will make it a sustainable contract for the Niners.
If I am the 49ers I sign Purdy. I don't care if it's 60M AAV but the early cap hits, guaranteed money and outs need to be team friendly. Then every draft I would be using late round picks to swing on bigger, stronger, faster QBs that are raw. Always be trying to get someone that could develop into a top 5 guy. I don't think Purdy is that. The system can make him look like a top 5 guy but he is a top 10 guy at best.
How much will Darnold get? He will be the benchmark for Purdy

You think someone is going to sign Sam long term? I thought he might get another 1yr or maybe a 2yr deal.

I think Minnesota will offer him a 2 year deal but not top of market
40 million per year

I could see him do a 1 year at 40mil but I think if someone wants him longer then he's going to want a 4 year maybe 180ish.
I could see someone like Seattle or Tennessee or Indy throw that type of money at him

That would be a good deal for both parties. Purdy will get more than that.

I realized that more as I read it. I thought there was more to it substance-wise then there ended up being but I figured it would lead to some interesting conversations. A friend of mine and I were actually talking about him last night and at least in Texas the talk is how he is nothing but a system QB and how you could stick a random person from the crowd there and that person would thrive.
My friend wondered that with how meh this QB class is this year if there was a team so desperate that they would trade a boatload of top picks and players to the 49ers for Purdy and Shanahan goes and drafts a new system QB. I don't watch the 49ers much so I have no idea if Purdy is a system QB or not its just what I keep hearing people say

Possible but seems unlikely. I don't think Shanahan wants to start again with a new QB especially with an aging team that probably has to win in the next couple years.
If they can't get a deal done more likely they make him play out his final year and then franchise tag him while they search for his replacement but I think a deal will get done. It suits both parties. 49ers need stability at QB for the next few years (and hopefully longer) and Purdy needs to hit the big pay day in case he turns into a pumpkin. I don't think he will turn into a pumpkin but two elbow injuries now and he wasn't as good this year.
For me, as long as the early year cap hits are low so they can keep a great team around him and as long they have decent outs after 3 or 4 years so if he does turn into a pumpkin they aren't tied to him for 7 or 8, then AAV doesn't really matter. It will get headlines and people will say he isn't worth that much but the structure of the contract is much more important to the team.
