A bit of political drama north of the border.
“I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for prime minister of Canada, soon to be known as the governor of Canada — you would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’"
He might be right. Gretzky, an NHL hall-of-famer-turned-entrepreneur and author, is a supporter of the Conservatives, and approval of the liberals under Trudeau is less than peachy:
To boot, Canadians generally don't approve of their party leaders, meaning Gretzky could have a fair shot at getting the nomination, provided a Pollievre resignation.
In the bargain, polling shows a pretty dismal outlook for the Liberals this time around.
"The CPC (43%) are currently doubling the Liberals (21%) and NDP (20%) in vote intention, as they have for most of 2024."
But could Conservatives win the two-thirds-majority needed to control the house under their beloved hockey all-star? Perhaps the more pertinent question is, could the fed-up-canucks 'draft Gretzky' into office?
His wife, Janet Gretzky, seems to think so.
What do you think, Stackers?
Can this be memed into existence? Would it be good for Bitcoin?
I think it could! Gretzky is a household name, a businessperson, and has been named Companion of the Order of Canada, the second-highest order for merit in Canada's system of imperial orders declarations and medals.
Gretzky would absolutely win if he ran, he is beloved in Canada, but he will never run.
reply
he will never run.
Why do you say that?
reply
He has shown no interest in running for office. He is retired and is enjoying his life in California and Florida playing golf.
Maybe if he thought the conservatives didn't have a viable candidate to run but they do.
reply
He's not retired; he is a studio commentator for cable TV hockey broadcasts. He also does ads for gambling apps. He seems kind of hard up for money despite being the greatest hockey player ever; a far cry from his peers like Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, and Mario Lemieux who have been very successful in their post-playing careers.
reply
So, your argument is because he does TV ads and works part time as a NHL studio analyst that means he will run for Prime Minister?
reply
That I am not sure about but I would expect that if he did it would go about as well as his experience with the Phoenix Coyotes.
reply
they do.
Possibly, but in the event that Singh doesn't withdraw his support, then Canada is looking at another 4 years of Liberal minority rule; NDP don't really stand a chance of winning, so what would Singh's incentive be?
Plus never under-estimate the allure of power!
reply
There will be an election in October regardless of what the NDP does and the Conservatives will win a majority.
reply
reply
Yes remind yourself. Conservatives are currently projected to win 225 seats. They need 172 for a majority.
reply
I'm not saying you are wrong, but obviously there is no guarantee. It should be interesting to see it play out.
I wont lie the way he ran the former Arizona Coyotes also gives me pause.... Granted that was a united effort with hella politics involved but they did go bankrupt.
reply
Might he seek redemption?
reply
I mean like grayruby was saying hes comfortable with what he has now and getting to do whatever he wants. Kinda hard to knowingly throw all that away esp for politics where you and your family will get rung over the coals.
reply
If I were him I probably wouldn't either. But with Trump's endorsement, I'd have to imagine, the temptation would probably be very real.
reply
You gotta give this up. As fun as it sounds and is to speculate, it's not happening. Haha.
He would be a great Governor for America's 51st State!
reply
Never heard of Gretzky. Trudeau sucks, so dont stick with the devil you know, just try something new.

Just realized this also could have been fitting for ~Stacker_Sports
