I am really curious how many if the territories here are paid up for the lifetime plan. Is there any way to know. I am planning on getting this one done this month. I am working hard to get it figured out. I really appreciate the support I have received. It's got me motivated and I am determined. I feel like it's best to get it done sooner rather than later when it is incredibly hard to put together 3 million sats. Does anyone know?
Sports is month to month. Need a more clearer path to break even and some kind of standard agreement with SN before I would outlay the 3M sats. Also will be good to see how external wallets only affect behavior on SN.
I have been able to pay the monthly territory fee from zaps and rewards earned throughout the month. If I didn't have the territory I would probably just zap most of those sats away so for me it's really just a time investment.
reply
Yeah apparently I may have to stick with month to month payment methods are failing for me for 3M sats

Did you try a swap-in service like with boltz.exchange? You can pay onchain but SN gets paid on lightning.
Fees don't look too bad right now:
edit: Oh, just saw you already tried in #689875

Where have you been hiding? You missed you pick in the pool last week and tanked your 10k sat buy in. Now you must rebuy to stay alive. If you dare.

He also owes me a chess move. I am Patiently waiting, however :)

I've been working on a little SN bot that can automatically create these chess board images in the background

Nice. Sounds awesome.

Wow! That would be so cool. A worthy cause for absence :)

So far, I can give it algebraic notation and it spits out an image.
For example, I can give it this:
e4 c6 Nc3 d5 d4 Nf6 e5 Ng4 Be3 f5 h3 Nxe3 fxe3 e6 Nf3 c5 g4 cxd4 Qxd4 fxg4 Qxg4 Nc6 Bb5 g6 Ng5 Qe7 Rf1 a6 Rf7
and it will print this:
Now I just need to hook this up to SN in a way that makes sense. Would be cool if it could just follow a thread and reply to each move with such a picture. Could also be flipped depending on whose turn it is to fix the awkward perspective with the black pieces.

Ughhh! Didn't read this prior to making a comment #690004 Yes, it should be there. What will happen to your investment after you pass away.
reply
Is it lifetime of stacker news or the individual. No one would know if I pass away and someone else takes over right?
reply
I don't see why I couldn't just hand the keys to my son.
reply
Definitely you should be able to.
reply
Need a more clearer path to break even and some kind of standard agreement with SN before I would outlay the 3M sats.
I agree. There should be one.
reply
I feel like it's a very low time preference investment. I can see it though.

I work under the premise that 3M sats are going to offer a significant amount of purchasing power in the coming decades. Those 3M sats may buy you a small house a decade from now. What happens if SN grows along with bitcoin and territories become profitable (you aren't getting rich but you are profitable and making a nice side income or a modest income from SN) then Saylor comes along and tells k00b he wants to buy SN for 5 Billion sats. k00b sells, buys himself a ranch and Saylor takes over. Saylor says it doesn't make sense for territory owners to capture all this value it should go to the company and territory owners are shit outta luck.
Not saying it is going to happen and if there were some protections or if the bitcoin price cut in half from here I would consider it and just replace the bitcoin I spent for it.
reply
That's a risk I am willing to take. I don't think @k00b would do that. Right now it's really only 1 or 2 typical mortgage payments in fiat terms. And I am earning more passively every month. And I just want to have the territory because I like it. That is how I would look at it. Yeah, there is risk but it's no different than me buying solar panels and miners. I think it will be great passive income.
reply
Whatever makes sense for you. I just laid out my logic. Doesn't mean I am making the right decision. Maybe SN will remove the monthly option at some point and then I will kick myself for not paying 3M sats when Bitcoin was 30k and instead paying 3M sats when Bitcoin is 300k.
reply
There is no right and wrong. Just different perspectives and approaches. I know my idea isn't for everyone.

3 million SATS is around 160000 INR here in India and its considered way too much to consider for investment without any security against it. I'm a busines person and I won't do it if I don't get enough assurance. Do we get it here on SN?
reply
No, but I run on intuition and faith. Maybe that's stupid. But it's totally a risk I am willing to take. I want the territory and it's better to just own it outright than to keep renting.
reply
I think it's roughly half of them.
reply
It's 17 out of 51 that are paid off.
reply
Wow, I figured it would be less since they were a new feature. I guess we don't know when they were bought outright, could have been more recently.
reply

I know at least 5 were outright in the first month.
reply
How new is the feature?
reply
I think https://stacker.news/~Dogs_And_Cats was one of the first created, and it shows as created early December 2023, so I guess about 9-10 months old now
reply
Oh, wow. Quick question. Once I pull the funds together. Is there a way to pay on chain. I have never moved big amounts on lightning before.
reply
No way to do it onchain right now. Maybe you can do a swap to pay it with https://boltz.exchange/
reply
Okay. I'll look into it. Thank you.
reply
I’ll try this as well!
reply
My only concern would be the invoice expiring by the time the onchain payment clears. So it might not work.
reply
Yup just tried boltz rejected it.
reply
Let me see if I can pay just with my ln node maybe I can find a route today

Obviously opening a big channel to SN will work. I know it will cost some sats, but then you can use it for zapping and receiving later.
reply
I still don't know much about it. It's kind of embarrassing. I tried running a lightning node before and it was very confusing to me so I shut it down. I should set my node back up and learn enough to make this happen though.
Yeah this might be the solution
I don't think there's any other except the ones that @k00b holds.
reply
I kind of had a feeling that may be the case. It's a big investment.
reply
Yes it is! I also intend to have a territory under my belt but I'm gonna buy it for a lifetime straightaway.
reply
Do you know what it is going to be?
reply
That's what I'm constantly thinking about. I don't have a clear idea till now.
reply
The longer you let it simmer, the better. I know if will be awesome. 🔥
reply
That is the smartest thing I think. I wanted to feel it out first, but I think if you have a clear vision and are ready to follow through, it's the best way.
reply
I do think a couple people have paid the 3M sats.
reply
#689839 He says 17. 👀👀

I was also wondering about the success (or luck rate) of territories... How many territories have there been overall, and what is the % that is still around?
reply
That is a great question. I would love to see a list of the archives. I have seen a few come and go. The other day I was looking for an old post of mine and after a while I realized it was in a territory that no longer is here.
reply
If we want to bring a territory back, can a new person do that? Is it just by picking the same name or does it have to go back to the original founder? And they can be renamed right?
reply
Is it just by picking the same name
Yeah, just type in the name when you're founding one, looks like total there've been 101 territories created. https://stacker.news/top/territories/forever I haven't figured out a way to sort by archived yet but you can scroll down and click on each to see if they're still around.
You just revive the territory and it becomes yours as if you made it.
reply
It's so cool how many different ways we can rank and see the territories, comments, posts, stackers on this site. Great analytics. I was searching everywhere on this list with different variables and I couldn't find alter_native anywhere. It turns out I was assuming it was lower on the list than it was. We rank between 10 - 12 for every metric. Interesting. That feels good and gives me more confidence that it is a good idea to keep it around.
reply
This is great to know. Thank you.

I don't know if I'm wrong, but it sounds like paying for the lifetime option is the most viable option. This logic is put forward in the following way: it is cheaper to buy a 40-roll toilet paper package that could last from a month and a half to two and a half months. Buying 4-roll packages week by week will always be cheaper to buy wholesale than retail. Now another question is, how much does that amount of (3M SATS - $1850 approx at prices of 61.8k as I write) represent for you and another important factor, as with any investment, how long will it take you to recover your 3M to really move into passive income mode. I don't dare to do the math here since I have no idea how much a territory receives monthly in SN
reply
I agree. It makes the most sense to me. It just requires conviction. Like any other investment it should be something I am willing to lose.
reply
I have been thinking about creating a Spanish-speaking territory. I know that there are many people here who speak Spanish and they will surely appreciate it. I also need to save up a little to see if we can pay month by month.
reply
Not sure is worth, the topic has been discussed many times and with many failed intents #581364 #647123
I still in the opinion that it should be the responsibility of SN or the end user to translate the contents in the user/browser preferred language. Currently there's also ~mexico, maybe you have a better idea to make it work and maintain a territory in a different language.
reply
This is an interesting question. How does this work on other similar sites that are larger?
reply
That's a great idea. I live on the AZ - Mexico border so almost everyone here speaks Spanish. I really want to learn more.
reply
Yeah, I was wondering if territory owners are "breaking even". If you make money, great, but I'm more concerned about not losing money.
reply
I am not making near my money back yet. But I am willing to bet I will eventually. it's growing.
reply
Keep in mind if you pay the 900,000 for a year, you still have another year to gather the next 2 million sats to finish off the payment, since you get pro-rated for what you've already paid.
reply
Wait, is this true??? That would be amazing. I can come up with the 1 million soon.
reply
Yeah as long as you pay it off before the end of whatever time period you've initially paid for. I'm doing this with ~charts_and_numbers right now.
You can basically try out a territory for 13 months for 1,000,000 sats, and then upgrade to finish the payment for the additional 2,000,000 at any time in that first 13 months.
reply
This is awesome and changes a lot for me. I still want to get it done quick. In a year collecting 3m might be super unattainable. Can you pay in a couple chunks?
reply
Can you pay in a couple chunks?
Not at the moment, but I'm pretty sure allowing different ways to pay territory fees is on the SN crew's radar.
reply
I’ve been wanting to start and manage a territory as well. One for bitcoin meetups and trip reports. I could provide a lot content to inspire activity in my own territory which would help me regain the sats and time of management. I can’t seem to pin down a nice catchy name that would attract all the attention I’d like however.
Anyways I’ve always known that if I do pull that trigger, I’ll pay the 3M sats. For me there’s a lot of value in instantly having a hard cap on the road to profit ville. If I were to pay month to month for a year and then decide to pay the 3M sats… then the journey of earning 3m sats starts then. With an entire year of paying fees behind me.

reply
That’s good news! One less reason for Me To actually start the territory :o
reply
Oops. To not start the territory*
reply
That makes more sense. I was wondering.
reply
Exactly. I don't want to rent anymore. That's awesome that you want to start another territory and that's a good idea. Names are important. 🤔

reply
So this (s archived and we can still see it. How does that work?
reply
I see that you are a man of action. Good luck
reply
I plan on trying to buy my territory today actually. I was trying to do it earlier but was having issues with finding a route for a 3M Sat payment
reply
That's what I am wondering about too. I still need to do a few things to get it together but I am determined. It's the goal for this month.
