Interesting! So you're saying that focusing on one genre actually made you more open to others in the long run? I know it's definitely rewarding for me to find an artist I enjoy in a different genre than normal!
Yeah, sorta. I think because I played piano, and guitar at around that time I had an understanding of the skill level required to play metal tracks. Those drummers? Bassists? Vocalists? Guitarists? Are all super talented, it's not all loud noises and screaming. When you watch the skill required from them to play that style, you start to appreciate the skill of the artist. Then if you appreciate an artists talent, it's kinda foolish to ignore it anywhere else. I may not understand hip-hop as an example, but the ability to flow in that manner, I mean I get tongue tied making a coffee order. Once you spot talent, you can't help but notice it everywhere and that's awesome to experience things you wouldn't otherwise have been able to appreciate as much.

Okay, that makes sense! I've noticed that myself with my guitar playing. Somewhat like you said about hip-hop, I'm the same way with some of the metal music that gets much heavier than groups like FFDP and Iron Maiden for example. I can admire and appreciate the skill of the musicians, I just don't always find the finished product to be something I enjoy listening to!

Bingo. Nailed.it, you've identified the move between a preference and an understanding of skill or an appreciation of talent.
Genres like grime, hip-hop, and stuff like that. Not my thing, that's preference, but do I recognise that the artists are talented. For sure I do.
I'll never say something like, "that was bad" or "that's shit" or whatever because objectively, those artists are very good at what they do, I just prefer something else.

I definitely understand where you're coming from there. I've run into the sentiment of 'if I don't like it it's garbage' a lot because of my varied musical tastes, and I've never understood it!
