I definitely understand where you're coming from there. I've run into the sentiment of 'if I don't like it it's garbage' a lot because of my varied musical tastes, and I've never understood it!

Bingo. Nailed.it, you've identified the move between a preference and an understanding of skill or an appreciation of talent.

Genres like grime, hip-hop, and stuff like that. Not my thing, that's preference, but do I recognise that the artists are talented. For sure I do. 

I'll never say something like, "that was bad" or "that's shit" or whatever because objectively, those artists are very good at what they do, I just prefer something else.

Music Territorys - Throwback Thursday!

Okay, that makes sense! I've noticed that myself with my guitar playing. Somewhat like you said about hip-hop, I'm the same way with some of the metal music that gets much heavier than groups like FFDP and Iron Maiden for example. I can admire and appreciate the skill of the musicians, I just don't always find the finished product to be something I enjoy listening to!
