No, I haven’t gone down this path yet. But I have to admit that my door is manned by digital locks. Wife hates the idea of carrying keys, and who am I to stop her?
I doubt our children will become latchkey in future, so we probably won’t need CCTVs. But if we do set up a surveillance system, I reckon it’s another nudge for us to get comfortable with the idea of a Smart Home.
Are you already living in one?

No, I want to live in a "wild house" inside the forest or mountains, near a lake or river and far from all collective stupidity.

Your comment made me realise that I’m a city boy through and through lol

I think it's a personal choice, but me for it's a hard pass. Just more layers of things to go wrong and set-up, and the ROI on is minimal. That's before touching the privacy / hacking angle.
Like I just don't care, flipping a light switch or using a key to open a door isn't a problem. Are we so soft now that using a key is somehow too hard, or even the act of having to carry something with us? That to me is scary.
An added thing for me is that it's not uncommon for our village to have the power go out if the weather is bad or something. it's not super common, but common enough that I have a backup propane canister with a hob for cooking (since the stove is electric), and it's a lifesaver.
My parents have an eclectic garage door and have been stuck a few times, not being able to get the car out so I tend to look at things from a perspective of 'will this thing work if the power is out' angle / is there a backup system, thinking like this hasn't failed me yet.

I think I will be slaughtered if I am to insinuate that my wife is soft for wanting digital locks haha
You are keeping it real. I am counting my blessings that electrical blackouts almost never happen in my country

after reading a book about hyperinflation in south Africa #922507 i almost want to become a prepper lol
at some point, i want to get like a shed-type building to store garden tools in, and i would consider a digital lock for that since it wouldn't be an issue

I've had some smart bulbs and power meters and some automations like make sure that all the lights are turned off at specific time at night or when I leave home.
Everything was self hosted and managed with home assistant. And in an isolated network.

I’m sure your hands-on experience must have given you a lot of satisfaction

No, I don't live in a smart house. I would much rather live in a green house than a smart house.

Your comment made me chuckle. Yes I will rather live in a green house too

Depends what you mean. Smart devices using only local network, I'm pretty ok with, but I want to avoid cloud based smart home services if I can.
I do use a ring doorbell with cloud service, so 🤷🏻‍♂️
reply
Nah. I will keep my home dumb as long as possible.

No, I just want to live with nature where my home is never locked.

IF I lived in a smart home, all of that shit would be flashed with custom firmware from a github repo and all of it would be self hosted. The whole system would be capable of working as intended even if I cancelled service with my ISP (self hosted)
Also some things like access to the home via the door would not be dependent on power or battery. Those failure is unacceptable cases would have an analog backup (so a custom firmware flashed smart lock could still be unlocked with a key)

However, no company is out here giving users control. It's sort of something you have to seize for yourself.
And as far as the "What if it gets hacked" concern goes: Yes.

This. Exactly. Smart homes can be awesome, but I don't want anything even touching the internet. Local LAN ONLY!!!

most things are not needed in that regard. I don't even have a TV and don't want one, if you thing how much energy those things spend and if you use it to mine sats...there you go

hard pass. no need and don't trust any iot gadget with my privacy

It's possible to accomplish this task in a sovereign way, and perhaps that could be desirable.
but it's a big step from material locks to smart material... and I suspect most of the actual magic of home intelligence is still far away
reply
Definitely maybe. On one hand I feel like it's just another way to give away more data, ans on the other hand, I feel like i can't stop them anyway....
