Why don't the known bitoiners shill SN more?

It seems like nostr gets all the love, and while it's fine and all, i would think more of the usual suspects in the btc place, the podcasters and alike, would at least mention SN a bit more as it's, IMO, still a unique thing in the btc space and there are zaps too.

maybe most people just aren't into the format of a forum? then again, whenever you look at the asknostr hashtag, it's just plebs talking to the void, not getting much of an answer, when they could be on askSN and getting their questions answered while doing some passive milking at the same time!

Since you can easily cross post to nostr, it seems like pure upside to post here. There are two explanations that come to mind, after wondering about this quite a bit myself.

Ignorance of some variety: The big bitcoiners don't know about SN or don't see learning how to use it as worth their time.
Conflict of interest: They see Stacker News as a competitor to their own brand and don't want to promote it.

I spent a long time thinking it was because we weren't good enough.

Then I learned it was more complicated than that (to put it nicely) and got really fucking pissed off at how naive I was.

Regardless, the best frame for us is that we aren't good enough, that I'm not being smart enough, and that I'm not working hard enough.

SN is my favourite place to be , by far

True meeting of people - and their true minds I’ve talked about more wholesome/“real life” on SN than I ever have/will on nostr.

It’s the only social place I get genuinely excited and show my partner - non bitcoiner - regularly.

I’m very ok with it not being the Uber popular place to be - as I doubt it would have the same feel to it.

Now where’s my cowboy hat got to?

Stacker news is, above and beyond, the best social media experience I’ve ever had. It’s certainly the only one that is net positive, except maybe the early days of MySpace. It’s also, ironically, the one in which I know way less people in the real world than any other. I don’t think this is the reason I dig it. I mention that as I think it’s a testament to just how awesome the platform is.

Comparing it to nostr, which is a totally different can of worms, doesn’t make sense to me.

Not sure why more bitcoiners aren’t into it yet…

fwiw, I like stacker.news for what it is. Nostr just seems like a Twitter clone, designed for doom scrolling, hot takes, and meme posting. It's not a format that lends itself well for more in depth conversation. I agree with @DarthCoin when he says SN is more like BitcoinTalk / Reddit

My suspicion what most bitcoiners think:

SN => centralized => bad nostr => "decentralized" => good

However, I think:

SN => decentralized/non-custodial money + centralized UX => good nostr => centralized/custodial money + decentralized UX => bad

Also:

The term "decentralized" is suffering from Goodhart's law. "Decentralized" has become a marketing term (see Bluesky etc.) but if it actually achieves what it was meant to achieve has become less relevant.

I believe Nostr's legacy will be for its censorship resistance and not decentralization. Last I checked, there were only a handful of "stock" relays that many of the hyped social clients recommend. I get it. Gotta crack some eggs....but then marketing should reflect that. Social beings gravitate toward the most useful and stimulating information hubs (the formation of cities proves this).

Common use case of nostr for most people is the same as SN. It's just another form of social media as far as most people are concerned.

They are totally wrong. nostr is not social media, is a protocol that can be used for many other things, for example nostr markets.

SN could be the replacement of the old defunct Bitcoin Talk and r/reddit where peaopl can talk in another way.

Even someone like @supertestnet couldn't see that CCs only exist for onboarding and they have value because they save you from giving us your sats for posts or comments.

Imo, CCs are no different than what @ACINQ or @Alby do with their fee credit model, see here and here.

But when a social media client does it to smooth over lightning UX, it's a shitcoin 🤷

There are swings of the pendulum from good to bad. It just depends on when you look at the pendulum where it is. Today is good tomorrow is bad and the day after tomorrow is better. You don’t know until you get there. The new people will come when they come and as much as you may worry about it, you can’t change it, even if you make outreach efforts.
