For me, there are 2 standouts. The first was Resident Evil when it first came out, as a kid at the time it was scary and it was stressful and I only managed to get past the spider boss.
I could only play the PlayStation at my aunty's house and we'd only usually go there once a year at boxing day and that was when I could play my uncle's PS1. The licker introduction in RE2 was terrifying, didn't have any clue it was coming. to this day my auntie remembers and knows what a licker is!
the second one was Project Zero (fatal frame in the US). I never owned this, but I would watch my best friend play it. it was a play-along before the genre became a thing on YouTube.
one time when we were like 17, we were house-sitting at his dad's place with a case of beers, while he spent most of the night trying to complete it. absolutely terrifying and man i was glad i didn't have the stress of trying to play it.
They did a release on Switch recently and I thought about getting it, but I thought, nah, my life has enough stress as it is!
honorable scary mention goes to Shadow man 64 and alien isolation. alien was more stress scary than 'scary scary', super atmospheric though.
what were some games that terrified you stackers?
