For me, there are 2 standouts. The first was Resident Evil when it first came out, as a kid at the time it was scary and it was stressful and I only managed to get past the spider boss.
I could only play the PlayStation at my aunty's house and we'd only usually go there once a year at boxing day and that was when I could play my uncle's PS1. The licker introduction in RE2 was terrifying, didn't have any clue it was coming. to this day my auntie remembers and knows what a licker is!
the second one was Project Zero (fatal frame in the US). I never owned this, but I would watch my best friend play it. it was a play-along before the genre became a thing on YouTube.
one time when we were like 17, we were house-sitting at his dad's place with a case of beers, while he spent most of the night trying to complete it. absolutely terrifying and man i was glad i didn't have the stress of trying to play it.
They did a release on Switch recently and I thought about getting it, but I thought, nah, my life has enough stress as it is!
honorable scary mention goes to Shadow man 64 and alien isolation. alien was more stress scary than 'scary scary', super atmospheric though.
what were some games that terrified you stackers?
That was around 2009 and it looked like this:
Who is old enough to remember this maze?
kind of looks like a metroid map, or was this an old dos game?
It was windows, as I remember, flash application. You move you mouse pointer and don't have to touch black boundaries. Three levels, next one is harder than previous. If you pass third level you get heart attack as winning prize
My screen remembers that!
I've been playing survival horror games since I was a teenager, and I am normally o.k with them if I turn up the brightness.
With that said, I couldn't play resident evil 7. There is a scene in Dino Crisis where a T-Rex smashes through a window, that use to get me every time.
was that because it was scary or because you didn't like the direction it went? i really liked 7 actually, the scene where Jack was driving around the garage trying to get you was quite intense lol
separate shoutout, but RE revelations on the 3ds was actually pretty scary when it came out
I genuinely found RE:7 absolutely terrifying. I couldn't make it past the first hour on easy mode.
the baker house was quite atmospheric lol
did you play re8? different vibe, but also good
The early Resident Evil games were first in my mind, too.
people forgot that because we didn't have youtube, there weren't really spoilers, and when those dogs smashed through the window the first time, underpants were soiled!
Amnesia series and Penumbra series from Frictional Games

It was a Playable Trailer for what was supposed to be a new Silent Hill game, developed by gaming legend Hideo Kojima.
There are remakes of it in Unreal Engine, but unless you downloaded it onto your PS4 before it was removed from the store, you can't play the original experience anymore.
view on www.youtube.comdidnt they do a silent hill 2 remaster?
Yea, came out last year.
This project was supposed to be a new installment called Silent Hills and ft. Norman Reedus. It got cancelled for some reason and Kojima pivoted and made Death Stranding, also with Reedus as the main character.
i might put that on my list, such a huge ass backlog tho !
fuck yes... i had trouble paying this alone..
it was actually quite groundbreaking in a lot of ways, combining puzzle, horror and story
Yes yes and yes.. also groundbreaking in scare the shit out of you 😂
annnd then slightly less scary
but we must remember, this was peak performance back in those days lol
Max Payne level where u had to follow the blood trail and hear a crying baby the whole time
that does sound teiffying. in re8 the part with the big baby chasing was also horrifying
came to say just this
As a young adult I loved to play F.E.A.R
missed out on that one, looks like an action horror. any remasters of it?
I don't thing there are any remastered versions
ah that's too bad
I loved Resident Evil but Silent Hill freaked me the F out
Does life counts as a game?
If not, I guess Ghosts 'n' Goblings.
I haven't played any other game that made me afraid, I'm afraid.
i never got far enough with that to actually get scared because it was so insanely hard lol
Easily the og silent hill for me
i never played that, would be keen to play the remaster though
Doom 2, if I first time play with sound card.
Idk I remember playing tomb raider on the pc when it first came out and some of those maps/missions made me feel kind of spooked. Must have been like 5 or 6.
Oh, also Metal Gear Solid (the first one)
