Ukraine has announced that it will not extend its gas transit agreement with Russia beyond 2024. President Zelenskyy confirmed that once the contract expires, it will be history. The shift marks a significant turning point in Eastern Europe's energy landscape, signaling Ukraine's intent to sever ties with Russian energy dependencies. While the current deal with Russia is off the table, Kyiv remains open to considering transit requests from other European partners within the EU framework.
Maybe they should blow up the pipeline to keep things easy and undercomplex.

This is not gonna end well...

So brace yourself for nice 2025 prices, Germany, right?

.... keep the germans down (and the russians out)

Ukraine is not doing anything good by doing such acts! This will only fill more pain to the AS.

Solidarity is practicality? Or am I being gaslighted into you-know-what. What is the benefit of doing this. Hardheadedness is not suppose to go in this direction.

Forcing the europeans into the war is the goal

At the end is still bad news for Europeans, again.

All of them. Teach the germans a lesson

It's wild to me that they're continuing to abide by this agreement during the war. I'd think one side or the other would have severed ties.
reply
It has shocked me as well and all I can think is that Germany and the other EU countries that depend on it told them hey we will give you cash and weapons don't destroy anymore than what is destroyed so Ukraine agreed. The contracts ending are going to really hurt Russia because even though Turkey is looking to be the new place Russian gas moves through those pipelines are stupid expensive and take time.
reply
Won't it hurt Europe worse, since they're already so energy poor and Russia can just sell into Asia's ever growing energy demand?
reply
I think so, yes
reply
Ironically Russia only has a single small pipeline to China... They are trying to build out additional facilities but again it take time and money to do this while China loves US LNG
reply
I didn't realize that. Does Russia export any LNG from their Pacific ports?
reply
Yes it appears they have two facilities one which came online in 2022 but they appear to be pretty small... One exported 10 mil ton of LNG the other under 2 million. In the US the top 5 range from 12.06 mil tons to 29.5 mil tons so they are there but it doesn't seem they are super effective.
Plus ships that carry LNG are super obvious since they are so unique in design so sanctioning those ships would be super easy for the West.

With this year's winter going to be much cooler, this is going to be huge dent on EU economy. Or, maybe Europeans can bear extended winters!
reply
No they can't. And the industry really can't pay higher energy prices
reply
With the huge increase in the amount of LNG worldwide being deployed and Germany in particular having the facilities now to get LNG via ships I wonder how the prices might be this time around. In 2022 they just didn't have the facilities and 2023 was a milder winter if I remember correctly so if the winder is worse Germany has had a ton of time to prepare.
Also, I was reading yesterday that Norway is looking into ramping up their oil and nat gas resource extractions again which would be super beneficial to the EU as well.
reply
I don't think they could provide gas with the same quantity and price level like russia did
reply
At the time they couldnt but now they have the facilities to be able to accept more gas than they could via pipelines and it was cheaper for a while since the Russians had comp. Currently, I am not sure but given how there is competition with the US, Russia, the UAE, and Qatar it should drive the price down.
reply
Then, they will be cursing Russia or Ukraine or their own EU?

It's always Putin
