Hey
I am just curious, is there a way to message people on here privately?
If I just want to chat with a specific person?
Other than finding an obscure post and typing on it together?
Anyones ideas are welcome!

We will only introduce private messages when we can end to end encrypt them - so they are truly private. We have plans to do this but it'll at least be a few months until we get to it.

How are you thinking of doing it? We're exploring combining e2ee / private key management stuff with secure enclaves to add verifiably private and secure use cases to existing applications via JWT / normal user login / oauth.

Could be a cool proof of concept here if you're open to that approach.

reply

We would probably use signal’s protocol with clientside key management. We aren’t actively working on it so nothing is locked or anything.

reply

Might be able to help with at least the client side key management part. Expecting users to manage, sync, and secure private keys for normal applications (let alone wallets) may be a big limiting factor. Even if you still want to roll your own, would love to chat as you start thinking about it more.

reply

Cool we’ll reach out before we begin seriously working on it

reply

You have to talk to @ek and @k00b for that one.
I will ring them up for you.

reply

He replied to me so I was notified. Thanks though

reply

oh right.
Sometimes I forget those details.

reply

Might I suggest adding a feature the lets SN receiving users to set minimum sat amount (in their settings) that is require for them to receive the message.

If SN sending user really wants to send Wumbo a messages they will have to pony up some sats.

For example : 100,000 Sats per message

This hopefully will take care of spam messages.

reply

Yep that’s what we plan

reply

Interesting.
k00b will have to consider it.

reply

That will be cool.
I would like to have some private conversations with some of the stackers.

reply

The way I’ve seen it done is with SimpleX Chat. Some stackers put a link in their bio to connect. I’ve done the same. It is E2E encrypted, no email or phone number required, and you can spin up unlimited profiles - for instance I have one just for SN.

Someone even created a group for SN stackers to chat. Thought it is pretty quiet #433342

reply

I will have to take a look at this post.
I know there was a chat feature at the bottom, I just have never used it.

reply

You have asked a question in my mind. I am also interested to know this.

reply

I know, I would like to dive in peoples wisdom, without it being all over.
Some of my questions might show my ignorance haha

reply

I just respond to a comment in an old post.

reply

I do the same.
I was thinking I would just @ someone on my bio to have a private conversation.
That would probably work.

reply

I gave one Stacker some sats n my private email address n asked to connect offline

reply

Did it work?
Were you able to connect?

reply

Yes I swap emails with him once a month

reply

That is amazing!
So it did work!

reply

Hi, have you tried GnuPG?

Btw, I'm looking for cyberpunks who actively use GnuPG and want to expand their web of trust by cross signing keys...

If anyone interested just DM me.

reply

I havent tried it yet, but I will check it out!

reply

Give me a thumb if you need any help or assistance

reply

Will do!

reply

How? I am curious about it too. We need separate message box, don't we? Hihi

reply

Yes, probably.
I guess it is in the works for the future!

reply

From @AG:

Not many stackers know how to send messages here in SN. After entering the user@stacker.news Ln address, an option to add a comment will appear
reply

I havent tried this yet.

reply

I think no I havent found private chat in SN yet
If any one knows about this please comments me

reply

Not a direct answer to your question but I have found Tox to be a great decentralised and encrypted chat program.

reply

signal? I hear it uses names now.

reply

Interesting way of doing it.

reply

Be aware it’s not E2EE since both ends are the SN node and we control it

reply

What is E2EE?
Im not going to be doing illegal things, I just want to talk to some of my favorite stackers.
Their wealth of experience and advice would be nice to hear about.

reply

I wanted to chime in and say that E2E encryption is not about illegal things. It’s for everyone, and ideally everywhere.

Everyone has the right to communicate privately, everyone needs E2E encryption of communications to protect them from malicious actors. By the nature of E2E, even if the operator is malicious, the user is protected.

Don’t think of it as enabling illegal activities, but protecting peoples communications from malicious actors of all persuasions.

reply

Okay, I see.

E2EE = end-to-end encryption

This means we can read your messages if we want

Just wanted to let you know in advance

reply

Im not worried.
You will probably find my conversations boring.
And you would probably know the answers to half of what I ask.
haha

reply

Are you telling me you can see my attached nudes?!..
