Love reading about this stuff. There was a book a few years ago that talked about all the tricks Atari 2600 programmers had to do to work around tech limitations, and I'm not shocked the PS1 folks had similar issues.
At the time the industry was full of people willing to take risks, ultimately that is what lead to good games :) I think it is true for most aspects of life. People who are willing to take risks usually end up making the better products etc.

Both games were top class, kids today will never understand getting a finished product and just booting it up and playing that disk to death

Silent Hill was one of hhe first fames that I played as a kid. So, thanks to you! You reminded me of so many things.

Playing Crash 1 now, its crazy how it is better than so many modern games. The word I would use for our current gaming landscape is overbloated as for skins, customizations and more.

That’s interesting.
I didn’t play Silent Hill but I played Silent Hill 2 and that was a great game. Horror isn’t really my genre but I really enjoyed that game.

Yeah, that series really managed to create a mood of horror that I'd never experienced with games before.

These weren't big games for me, but the idea reminds me of the creators of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia talking about how restrictions put on them by the network executives or budget constraint often led them to make even better creative choices.

When they had to actually finish the game before releasing it forever, like games for SNES, PS2, etc, they were usually of much higher quality than the games that allow updates.
You can still play Super Mario World today, 34 years later, and it works fine, immediately.
Try to play the latest game. Yeah, you need to update it after you just installed it.

Yeah, constrained-creativity is a thing.
When you have unlimited freedom you might end up with analysis paralysis. You can do anything, so you do nothing.
But if you can do only three things, your brain can decide which one to do.
That's partly why they usually sell three levels of price in wines, often it is from the same winery, they do a cheap one, an expensive one, and another one in between. Most people guess the cheap one might be too bad, and the expensive one is too much, so they just grab the middle one.

There was a good series called "War Stories" on Youtube that dealt with some of this stuff. The Crash Bandicoot episode was pretty cool.

Constraints usually lead to creative/lateral thinking. You see the same thing with good storytelling.

I remember Silent Hill was ahead of its time, PS1 beating N64 power with awesome games as FF7 and FF9
