The British empire let go of colonies not because it wanted to but because it was so stretched and did not have the resources to defend them. It is the destiny of bloated empires, they get trapped into endless wars and crumbled under their own weight

reply

That is totally true and it is something that has happened over all the years... the same thing happened in all empires: they wanted to cover too much and collapsed without remedy...

reply

Imperial overstretch is what Paul Kennedy wrote

US is not giving up that base until technology permits (Hypersonics, directed energy, efficient and autonomous AI piloted fighter/bombers). Especially with all the troubles with bases and personnel on Okinawa.

:( I still have some hope.

How is Korean baby-shopping tourism in Guam these days?

reply

First Korean women need to get pregnant which is a rare occurrence

Korean birth tourism to Guam has been a growing phenomenon in recent years. Many pregnant Korean women travel to Guam, a U.S. territory, to give birth and obtain U.S. citizenship for their children[1][4][5].

There are several reasons why Korean women choose Guam for birth tourism:

  1. Obtaining U.S. citizenship for their children, which is seen as a status symbol and can provide educational and immigration benefits[1][5].
  2. Guam's proximity to Korea and the ability to stay for up to 15 days without a visa[5].
  3. The presence of birth tourism agencies in Korea that help arrange flights, hospital stays, and translators for pregnant women[1][5].
  4. The lower costs compared to giving birth on the U.S. mainland[5].

However, Korean birth tourism in Guam has faced some opposition. U.S. conservative groups argue it is a "loophole" that allows backdoor immigration, while some Koreans see it as unpatriotic[1]. The U.S. government has also cracked down on birth tourism in recent years[5].

In 2012, there were more births to Chinese tourists in the nearby Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands than to the indigenous population, with Korean births also increasing[4]. While birth tourism provides an economic boost to the region, there are concerns about the long-term implications for the children's identities and potential chain migration[4].

Oh wow, the country is actually very diverse! "People. Native Guamanians, ethnically called Chamorros, are of basically Malayo-Indonesian descent with a considerable admixture of Spanish, Filipino, Mexican, and other European and Asian ancestries."

reply

Aye, aye!

reply

Why do you want independence?

reply

Sovereignty, and identity.

My people want this. We have less bill of rights then Americans do. The constitution can waive the rights. Also, we can bargain with the u.s

reply

There are US bases all over Europe. And those are all sovereign countries.

reply

And none of them were ever U.S. territory, nor does any single location have the strategic importance.

reply

Why not! If the people of your nation want it they can get it. It's just a matter of being United.

reply

both? the US is evil and yes, it can be gained, just.. not freely, by permission of the US, but when the US is too entangled in too many wars abroad that it has no capacity to also manage an unruly colony.

reply

Perhaps, a republic can be made? Hmm

reply

Yes u can

I also don't think US will let it go.

I've listened to so many stories about Guam. Now I know a Guamanian.

But have hope, brother. It's not always dark of it is.

reply

Ohh you met?

reply

Maybe, but you'd probably have to allow the US to maintain their military base. On the bright side, the US Empire seems to be crumbling, so you might gain sovereignty by default.

reply

Or under rule another empires rules. U.s. corporation bought this island after Spanish war. Can be bought and turned into slaves again

reply

That would be an advantage of having the US base there. At least then no other empire will take it over.

How much of the population of Guam is directly connected to the US military?

reply

Unfortunately, many chamorros have taken arms and joined the u.s. military for benefits alone. Mainly, due to lack of opportunities closed because of u.s.

reply

Yeah, that'll make it tricky politically.

reply

Very strategic location in the Pacific, proximity to Asia

reply

This is why we can bargain

reply

You have no bargaining chip or leverage

reply

All of the armed bases reside here, many of them are islanders. The Americans are the foreigners, they do not speak the language. The bases are on CHamorro land, it belongs to the people. I do not appreciate your presence here, listing articles, facts you wiki, googled and placed them here. You've probably never been here, the islanders make up the majority, the Americans are the minority.

Guam has been a USA territory since 1898

Before that Guam 🇬🇺 was Spanish territory

You’re right I have never been to Guam but I know 2 people who were born there. One was a military brat.

reply

You know two, I live next four on my right and three above me in my building. I drive and see them every day. You see the “two” that you mention, every once in a while. The military brat isn't even an accurate representation unless they're of Chamorro lineage. Even if they are Chamorro ancestry, do they speak the language? Do they know the history of their people or history of the Americans? Being born on Guam instantaneously makes every one here as U.S. Citizens. Guam/America Samoa is the "FARM" that the U.S. is using to fight wars abroad.

👉Territory residents in Guam and American Samoa serve in the military at much higher rates than those in the states. The territories are also home to more than 100,000 veterans.
reply

Military brat is American.

I don’t know about my other friend. Work friend

Im pretty sure the USA is never just going to let their territories go. Unless it joins and becomes a state like hawaii.

reply

Do the majority of people on Guam want independence? Are there any polls with hard numbers?

reply

I think it could, but probably not for the foreseeable future.

As the Roman Empire faded, as eventually did the British Empire, at the weakest point of the U.S. Empire - that is when Guam should fight for independence. They can't chase 10 things at once, wait until the U.S. is distracted with several more important issues.

reply

that dont think so As of now, Guam remains a U.S. territory, and any discussions about sovereignty would depend on the will of its people and the political and legal feasibility of such a change.

reply

The main benefits of Guam being a U.S. territory are:

  1. Military protection and strategic location: As a U.S. territory, Guam receives military protection from the U.S. and serves as an important strategic location for U.S. forces in the Pacific[1][4]. Guam hosts major U.S. military bases and has been a staging area for U.S. operations.
  2. Access to U.S. citizenship and travel: Residents of Guam are U.S. citizens and can travel and work freely in the U.S[1]. The Guam Organic Act of 1950 conferred U.S. citizenship on Guam residents.
  3. Use of U.S. currency and economic benefits: Guam uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency and can potentially benefit from U.S. economic resources and aid[1]. However, Guam's status also makes it vulnerable to financial crises[1].

The downsides are that Guam residents cannot vote for the U.S. president and have limited representation in Congress, despite being U.S. citizens[5]. Many Guamanians feel they are treated as second-class citizens[5].
