@ek is a certified pleb, I can confirm. He recently visited Pleb Lab and I got to ask him a few questions. Being familiar with Ek’s posts, I knew that I could simply walk up and start talking with him. So that’s exactly what happened, in fact, I think this rescued him a little bit. Immediately I felt that we were friends. A SN —> meat space crossover success!
in this report: who is EK, the pleb first jobs thoughts on tech SN theories/ideas
Pp How old were you when you got into bitcoin? Ek 21. Pp When I think of a pleb, I think it’s someone whose curiosity about bitcoin changed the course of their life. Is it true for you? Ek So true, it’s actually scary knowing that something can change your life so hard. My previous life, my life before bitcoin, I feel like I can’t go back. There’s no way I could be that person again. Pp Do you miss the person that you were before? Ek Yeah, I mean, I miss the feeling of not thinking so much about all this pleb stuff. I know I can’t reverse how I see the world, but I don’t like that it matters so much. It’s now like a wall between me and other people. I miss not having that wall.
Pp Have you ever had a “normal” job? Ek I delivered newspapers when I was in school. Pp Did you ride a bike? Ek No, it wasn’t like in the movies. I just walked. Sometimes, the hardest part was finding the mailbox for the house. I also worked in Burger King as cashier. Pp Was it cool? Ek It’s cool to think about, but not cool at the time. (Ek tells a story about a man who became aggressive with him during his shift at Bk.) I was a mailman later. Being a mailman is cool because you build a relationship with people. They ask, “What is it today?” or they’re happy that you brought them what they were waiting for. There was a cat I always stepped over on someone’s stairs. I began to meow at her, and she meowed back. So we had an understanding after that.
Ek Technology makes us do less. Pp Do you fear it? Ek I see two kinds of people, someone who is really into tech and wants it everywhere, even in their refrigerator. And the other is more like a pleb, a little intimidated by it, but learning it to leverage it.
Pp Do you think Jack Dorsey is on SN? Ek No. Pp Confirmed? Ek Not confirmed. I think he’s too busy and SN is too under the radar. Pp But will it always stay under the radar? Ek That’s the question.
Pp What’s something that never gets talked about on SN that you wish would? Ek I like the surprising, interesting, doesn’t have to be controversial but usually is. Outliers. But I think it’s the relationship between k00b and the stackers. He should be seen as just another stacker. He seems to be often close to the top, but do people zap him because he’s the founder? Because they think “whatever he says must be great.” Sometimes it feels biased, but he posts good stuff. Pp Ah that’s true. If you create the thing, you must be a good user of the thing.
Thanks for reading. Things got real in this one. What did you think? A real pleasure to meet you @ek.
I enjoyed the part about how not knowing about Bitcoin meant that ek didn’t have any walls with other people. Some deep introspective thinking here.
Well, it’s lonely at the top, so enjoy the great view!
reply
I did have walls, but they were different and smaller and less obvious.

Mhh, interesting perspective 👀 I will noodle on that.

I think k00b spends around 2-3x what he stacks daily and that’s why he is usually near the top but his posts are good and popular. I am sure he gets a small benefit in popularity due to being the founder. But hey if you want to be the man you gotta beat the man!

This was great! Feel like I heard both yalls voices talking. 🤣

Great thoughts! I also delivered newspapers while in school. I was paid nearly $6 $7 a month in the year 1999 (just 11 years old) for that part time work. It was a good amount here for me considering I just had to work two to three hours. Kinda little personal, of you can tell how was that experience? How old were you back then? How did it affect your education?

You only had to deliver once per month?
how was that experience? How old were you back then?
It was cool to earn some money as a kid. I must have been around 15 years old at the time. I think I earned ~100€ per month for a delivery once a week.1
But in hindsight, the pay was miserable per hour. They paid by piece and I only earned ~25€ per delivery with everything included. Sometimes, I would get a ton of advertisements that I had to include in the newspaper by hand before going out but we usually did that as a family. Maybe even with four people that took 1-2 hours? I don't really remember except that your hands were already dirty at that point with all the printing ink. Then the delivery itself added 2-4 hours based on weather conditions.
So I earned between 4€ and 8€ per hour. But I get that delivering newspaper is not the hardest thing in the world.
Just like my experience with Burger King (where I consistently earned minimum wage which was 8€ per hour at the time), I am glad that I did this but in hindsight, it sucked really hard. But it was also definitely an invaluable experience that prepared me for life in their own unique ways.
How did it affect your education?
Not at all, I delivered during the weekend or in the evening.

Footnotes

  1. However, I didn't get to keep most of the money since I had to support my parents (according to what they said).
reply
Thanks for the reply!! Yours and mine had been much the same experience!!! I didn't let my education got effected at all.
You only had to deliver once per month?
No, daily 2 or three hours, paid 6 or 7 dollars monthly.

@ek taking shots at @k00b! Is this a coup?
A little advice from our favorite show:
  • You want a shot at the [k00b] throne? You better bring a powerful ass!

Is this a coup?
now I will always read @k00b as coup

Weird, I didn't find the scene on YouTube by searching for "you want a shot at the jeff winger throne community scene". I only found this here:
the funny part is that I actually identify with Abed
reply
I always sort of pictured you as Abed. After seeing you on SNL, I picture you as White Abed.
reply
I picture you as White Abed.
I am not white though 👀
To quote @itsTomekK response when I asked him how he recognized me in Warsaw during Bitcoin FilmFest even though we only met once online a while ago:
You're brown.
reply
You were completely covered. Your voice sounded white, to me.
Also, White Abed isn't white either.
reply
Didn't I say "you're brown and handsome" ?
reply
Would you say he looked like Brown Joey?

Awesome! That's how I originally pictured EK.
You would

🤣 tbf I often wonder that too @ek, also its just good to give @k00b crap sometimes, we do it lovingly.
reply
FWIW, I always hear "k00b" in your voice, Car.

@ek I do not zap @k00b just because he's the SN founder. I zap his posts only when he says something interesting for me or is a link or post of public interest and should be zapped to push it to the top.
I do this with any stacker not only with k00b. But yes, I could say that there's a respect towards k00b. I see him (on SNL) as a really humble bitcoiner and focused only on SN and few other things.

Nice to hear your story @ek. Maybe I shouldn't, but with certain friends of mine that are not into bitcoin, I'll just have small talk. It's not the best, but it keeps the relationship humming. We both worked fast food! I was working at Wendy's flipping burgers one summer and I will never forget that experience. It taught me the value of hard work, but I am in a better place now :) . Nice Q&A, would love more in this format.

I am glad you noticed!
I am forever grateful that you made the first move with 'Are you very busy right now?' I was surprised that I didn't give a second thought to sharing with you that I cried during Forrest Gump on the plane. That’s how comfortable I was during our first conversation, haha
I sometimes feel like my mind can't comprehend how someone can be as cool as you are 👀
Btw, we also discovered during the interview that I suck at taking notes haha. We agreed on interviewing each other, so stay tuned for 'An Interview with Plebpoet' (or however I am going to call it)!

Wow! A very good and very close interview, also very human, I loved it!

I'm at the top of the "value" rankings despite being have a baked in penalty because I spend the most money ... as do most of the folks at the top.
reply
Is some of that because you gave yourself the best trust score?
reply
42 sats \ 0 replies \ @k00b 29 Jun
Yes, I do have "perfect" trust by default, but most of the top stackers have earned near perfect, if not perfect, trust too.

stackers have outlawed this. turn on wild west mode in your /settings to see outlawed content.
