The Little Things
Sports matches, series, seasons are comprised of hundreds, thousands and even tens of thousands of moments, plays and decisions. However, often a game, series or even championship may come down to very few moments or even one decision. I know this full well being a 49ers fan and seeing how they dealt with their final third down play of regulation in the Super Bowl where a first down would have allowed them to run the clock down and kick a FG to win. They didn't pick up the CB blitz, Brock was pressured and the pass to CMC was incomplete while Brandon Aiyuk stood wide open on the other side of the field. Had Aiyuk alerted Brock the DB was lining up offset, different outcome, had the 49ers run when Chiefs were selling out for the pass different outcome. One of the amazing things about sports is how tens of thousands of decisions can lead to a moment where one decides the final outcome for all of them.
The Boston Celtics are a superior team to the Indiana Pacers, but the Pacers are fast and scrappy. The Celtics lead the series 3-0 so at first glance one would think that makes sense they are the better team but the series could very easily be 2-1 Pacers. In game one the Pacers had a 3pt lead with 30 seconds left in the game. If they had fouled the Celtics would not have been able to tie without fouling themselves to extend the game and hope for a miss. Instead Brown hit an incredible 3 pointer from the corner to tie the game and the Celtics won in OT. In game 3 last night with the Celtics ahead by 1 and 7 seconds remaining the Pacers chose to push the ball up court instead of taking a timeout and setting up a play to try to hit a winning shot. The play was rushed, out of control and defended by one of the best defenders in the league. It led to a turnover and the Pacers never got a chance to take a potential game winning shot. Tough to go down without a shot.
In sports, like in life, sometimes it is the little things that make all the difference in the world.
Sats for all, GR
Oh my, 2 of the best closers in the league is no joke! Poor Minny getting their souls beat out of them. 34 seconds left, but game is already over.
reply
Pick one.
a) minny were overrated because they beat the champs b) minny used the entire gas tank to beat the champs and didn’t have enough left for Dallas c) Dallas is just that damn good d) Dallas is just that damn hot right now
reply
I think it's c.
Something we may have overlooked is that this Wolves team was designed to beat the Nuggets, specifically. It turned out they weren't quite tooled up for Kyrie and Luka. Also, once again, KAT is the dumbest player in the league and it's hard to win with the dumbest guy in the league on the court.
reply
I actually think it’s a bit of b, c, and d but since I said pick one c is good.
I wouldn’t say minny is overrated they could have won all 3 of these games. Maybe their ability to close out a game is overrated. I think Kyrie and Luka are incredible but I also think they are hot right now. Some of those shots were ridiculous.
But give them credit where credit is due so I agree with C.
Boston game plan: be up by 10 going into the final minute of every game.
reply
Boston definitely can do that, and would probably need to do that to win. If they let the Mavs keep it close, what happened to Minny could very well happen to them.

I also pick c.
I think it's matchup. Dallas seems to be a bad matchup for Minny, with both Kyrie and Luka balling. When Minny double them, they feed the others; when Minny play them one on one, Minny gets cooked and eaten for breakfast, lunch, dinner. Also, all 3 games were quite close until the final minutes in the 4th. Then Luka and/or Kyrie would take over and close up the game.
It seems if Minny wants to win, they need to get a big lead and maintain the lead until late in the 4th. If the game stays close until late, Kyrie and/or Luka will find a way to win. But we're already at 3-0, so it might already be too late for Minny.
Also, I feel your frustration on KAT. When I watch him play, I kept wondering WTF was he doing? Does he not know he is 7 feet tall? Why isn't he exploiting his size and just kept chucking up 3's that miss? He already missed 5 or 6 3's and still kept shooting them. I was like, go to the rim man! SMH...
reply
Ok I will mark you down as undecided on Raptors acquiring KAT. Haha
Good analysis. I think you are right about it being a bad matchup for Minny.
reply
Stupid Pacers. I've lost like 6k on them because of those loser-ass decisions. Considering how close they were, and how long the odds were, I think those were the right bets, but being right doesn't get me my sats back.
Now, I'm starting to worry about Dallas winning the whole thing, because they have two guys who always seem to make the right play when it matters.
reply
I wouldn't mind seeing Luka raise Larry. I've always enjoyed watching him play since his rookie year. I mean, with plays like this, how can you not enjoy his game?
And Kyrie being the magician he is. Whether the Mavs can get to the finals or not, can win it all or not, they are just a fun team to watch.
Good luck on your future bets.
reply
I would rather see Minny win. It’s always nice to have a new team winning it but if Dallas defeats them I will definitely be cheering for the Mavs.
Dallas could have the Mavs and Stars in the Finals. When is the last time that happened?
reply
I picked Minny to win the series also, but couldn't help marveling at Luka and Kyrie's game. Also, these analysts on TV keep saying Ant is gassed from the previous series and whatnot, but what about Luka? The man is playing on a bad shoulder, sore ankle, and a sprained knee. I don't see people talking about that.
Dallas could have the Mavs and Stars in the Finals. When is the last time that happened?
Last time it happened in Tampa in 2021. The Buccaneers won the Super Bowl and the Lightning won the Stanley Cup. It was a good year for sports in Tampa.
reply
Yes, I was aware of the Tampa one and the year before the Dodgers and Lakers both won the championship in the same year.
I more meant the same city having two teams vying for a championship at the same time since hockey and basketball finals coincide. I am trying to think of one without looking it up.
reply
I cheated and looked it up. The last time was 2016 when the sharks and warriors were in the cup and nba finals.
reply
I cheated too, haha.
reply
I can't think of one off the top of my head, so I went for the powerful search engine. Here is the list:
1957 - Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins 1958 - Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins 1972 - New York Knicks and New York Rangers 1974 - Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins 1980 - Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers 1992 - Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks 1994 - New York Knicks and New York Rangers 2003 - New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils 2016 - Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks
reply
You got a full comprehensive list. I only looked for the last one. Nice work.
reply
That's really funny. It seems like we're each sort of rooting against our own financial interests.
reply
What would an economist say about that?
reply
Value comes in different forms and not all can be measured by money? And maybe, sometime, it's not just about the money?
reply
Yep. You nailed it.
reply
Must be all that hiking he does. He has sought and found higher purpose both literally and figuratively.
Well said.
reply
Thanks, I'm only worried about Dallas winning, because then I owe @grayruby a kilosat.
I've come to really enjoy watching them play. Luka's passing is incredible and Kyrie's one of the most stunning players ever.
reply
Dallas about to be my only hope. I would still rather Minny win and just take my L. At least I know my 1k sats will go to a good home.
reply
That's the tough thing with betting. It's costly when the teams you bet on do dumb things. I just get to critique it as an intellectual exercise.
reply
Yeah. I suppose they're heavy underdogs for a reason.
reply
I don't relish being a broken record, but I hate watching KAT play basketball. He just keeps kneeing that poor kid from Dallas: first the nuts, then the back of the head. It's like have a big dumb ox out there, but an ox that can make 3-point shots.
reply
Some months ago, in a moment of insanity; I thought it might be good if the Raptors traded for KAT.
reply
Did I make fun of you for that? I vaguely recall making fun of you for that.
reply
I think you were too concerned for my mental health to make fun of me. Haha
Yeah I think you made fun of me.
reply
I remember that conversation. I was very against the idea of KAT coming to the Raps and also voiced my opinion.
reply
At least one of you isn't all the way out of your entire damn mind.
reply
On the final drive, the 49er should have run the ball on third down. If it’s 4th and short go for it. Otherwise you also run clock
reply
Completely agree.
reply
I feel like hockey's momentum swings are the most violent and it makes it tough to bet.
reply
Definitely. If a goalie has a hot game in hockey the team can win even if they get outplayed badly. I have seen games where teams have a huge advantage in time of possession and scoring chances but lose 2-1 or 3-2 because the opposing goalie was unbelievable.
reply
I've seen quite a few of those done by the Canucks back in the Luongo days.
