What does it mean to worship? When I think of my definition, none of these guys are doing that.

reply

What do you think they are doing?

reply

My impression is #1 is trying to elevate his idol; #2 is seeking refuge/relief; #3 is seeking sanctuary. My perceptions here (on #1 and #2 particularly) are highly influenced by my cultural/political upbringing. #4 is smugly pleased, although he appears ready for action in the world.

In other words, 1-3 are more/less asking for something and probably also “giving” something back - to ask is to concede inferiority/lack. That act of giving power to the “worshipped” is I think what is colloquially understood as religious worship. I just wonder if these examples are bit anemic compared to the otherwise secular use of the word as in “to worship a lover.”

If we could be a little liberal and imaginative, could we make up a story where #4 actually “worships” life because he is willing to do what it takes to act within it and fulfill life’s desires?

reply

Absolutely, belief systems come in countless forms, ranging from traditional religions to personal philosophies, ideologies, or even admiration for certain figures or concepts. These beliefs can indeed take on the role of a higher power in a person's life, influencing their actions, values, and perceptions of the world. It's fascinating how varied and deeply ingrained these belief systems can be across different cultures and individuals.

Lmao I fucked up already at work and its not even 10 AM. I was laying on the couch of my subcommittee boss and I guess it startled him and he forgot his password for his computer... He has been locked out for an hour now as we wait for IT to come and unlock it.... Needless to say he is pissed

Idk our office is definitely different than most. He's my boss in that he is the next level above me but he also doesn't have the ability to hire or fire. Not to mention he does need me for a lot of stuff... I kinda carved out this great little niche of being able to do/fix almost anything within the office and know how everything operates so I can push the limits more

Maybe it is how I grew up. I would not lie down on anyone's furniture without permission. And hardly any condition that want emergency would lead me to ask permission. It's not something we do where I am from, I guess.

Preparing for a job transition and getting fixated with left-field interview questions.

Are you a lucky person?

My answer:
Throughout my career, I have benefitted occasionally from being in the right place at the right time. My latest stint at NorthLight School saw me being groomed to become a literacy coach because my colleague was intending to leave her job. This meant that I got to use my training funds to attend the online Orton Gillingham course. However, I think that my inquisitive attitude and diligent nature help me gain substantially from my luck. I regularly visit r/Dyslexia on Reddit and read books on dyslexia to beef up my knowledge. I also take the initiative to consult my contacts from the Psychological Services Branch and have them clarify my doubts.

reply

I think this answer is awesome! I love how honest it is too!
It has been far too long since I needed to answer questions like this in a work setting and I am not sure I would have beefed out the answer quite as eloquently as this... I would have probably answered with, "I create my own luck", which I don't think would go down quite as well!

reply

On the contrary, I think “create my own luck” is a catchy tagline that will help interviewers remember me better. In fact, I’m going to weave it into my answer above. 👆🏽
Thanks for commenting!

We get so busy worrying about the future that we forget the good things right in front of us.
A kind word, a cozy blanket, cool breeze, cloudy sky, a beautiful sunset, there's always something to be grateful for. Tonight, solovely before bed, think of three things that made you smile today. End your day with gratitude, and you'll find even more joy tomorrow… Guaranteed! 😉

reply
reply

There is so much that we miss in the present moment because we are worrying about a future that doesn't even exist!

My things to be grateful for today:

  • my son, bringing me coffee in bed so I could have a lie in after the dog woke me up at 2am.
  • the dog, now taking a nap after being up most of the night meaning I can quietly get some work done without him trying to distract me!
  • the sun trying to peek through the clouds, meaning it is warm but not too warm so I am able to finish power-washing the back garden later
  • the calmness and power that silence holds
  • my ability to observe rather than react

There are more, however I am not sure people want to hear about my conversations with the trees!

Here is a picture taken of the beautiful sunset I encountered the other night and made my son take a snap of as we were driving!

Finally installing Zeus. Will neutrino sync in the middle of the mountain with a 3G connection? Or is it better to do initial sync on a fast connection first in a city and then use it on 3G later? Or doesn't matter?

reply

May take a few days but should work, but it could reset.

reply

https://m.stacker.news/28825

If you click on that hourglass icon, you could test your neutrino peers.
If the results are higher than 150-200ms ping then you will have trouble syncing.
Is enough to have one that under those values or better 30-50-70ms and you will sync just fine.

If none of those default neutrino peers will not give you good ping, it means you are too far away from their location and/or you are using a VPN that is filtering those IPs or the port.

Try other ones until you find a closest one. Or connect to your own Bitcoin node, activating neutrino on it (is just a line in bitcoin.conf) if is closer to your location.

Here is a list to find more neutrino peers:
https://bitnodes.io/nodes/?q=NODE_COMPACT_FILTERS

reply

Thanks. Sorry I didn't reply right away and then I forgot. It got synced in about 5 minutes without any problem. The ping is 390ms. But it works :)
I like this. It seems there are advanced settings everywhere for the advanced user but also works well with default settings for new users and the LSP seems like a great thing.

reply

390ms is quite a lot, you will have problems syncing.
Find better peers from that list I sent you.
Put like 4-5 of them to have redundant peers, in case some of them goes busted.

reply

I would do a fast connection first time

Thank you for your input however I choose not to have you in my world. I simply do not have space for those who do not align with my values.

How do they tend to reply?

You are SO toxic and egotistical!

I would rather they think that of me and lose them from my life instead of being dragged down by the energy they emit!

Mr or MrsMr or Mrs

Applying the word Mister, which is commonly abbreviated to just Mr, is a title used before your surname or full name, and is used to address a man without a higher or honorary or professional title.

Mister is derived from the term Master. It should also be noted that the term “master” is often applied to, or used in addressing politely a boy, who has not come of age, and therefore cannot use any other title.

Mrs has the same standing as Mr, and comes from the word “Mistress” which is the counterpart of “Master”.

However, both titles are only making reference to your legal name, and have a status lower than most other, if not all other, titles within a “court of legislation”.

Accepting the title of Mr or Mrs enters you in the jurisdiction of “Mercantile law”, which is also known as commercial law or trade law.

This is the law dealing with persons, the corporate sense, and businesses engaged in commerce, which deals with both private law and “public legislation”.

EsquireEsquire

Esquire is a legal title of respect, and acknowledgement of a man with a higher social rank.

Historically Esquire refers to a young nobleman, who in training for knighthood, will act as an attendant to a knight.

In legal terms it moves the status of a person higher within an administrative court, often applied to a Lawyer, who is now above the Plaintiff but still lower than the Judge.

SubjectSubject

When you are referred to as a Subject you have become a person or thing that is being discussed, described, or dealt with regarding an issue.

You are also subject to all the rules, codes, regulations, etc. issued by your master.

Your status has been dropped to the lowest level, that of a person, and only refers to your legal identity.

You have put perfectly into words what I was trying to say to someone the other day and got myself tangled! Thank you!

reply

Very interesting, as always.

I was looking at the word 'husband' a few days ago, wondering whether or how it is related to 'husbandry' in the agricultural sense. I suspected it conveyed a sense of looking after one's wife in the same way as one's cattle, but it's not so. It only means the master of the house, and it comes from the old Norse.

https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=husband

That replaced the word 'wer' from Old English, so previously husband and wife would have been wer and wife. The dictionary also reveals that wer only lives on in werewolf, but I'd like to see a wer revival.

I'd always understood Esquire to be a consolation prize for the sons that weren't the eldest, so those that would go without a title. That corresponds to Chinese, where Mister is XianSheng 先生, literally 'first born'. I don't know whence comes the use of Esquire for the son of a father with the same name, I think it's an American tradition.

reply

HusbandHusband

Although the common meaning behind the word husband since the year 1290 means “married man”, it holds its roots from an Old Norse and Icelandic word “husbondi” which meant “householder”, with the word “bondi” meaning “a peasant who owned his house and land”.

Note: being a peasant meant clear title to any property was forbidden, with ownership only allowed.

“Bondi” also meant bond, with the word “husbondi” being a combination of the word “house” and “bond”, referring to a “serf” or “bonded slave” living in a house, also known as a “dweller”.

Over time, the term “husbandry” referred to the “care of a household” or “shrewd use of resources”, with women looking for a “man with resources” and, once found, would gain a “husband”.

Think of yourself as a ripple in a vast cosmic ocean, constantly moving and changing.

When you exist, death isn't a thing. It's only when death seems to be there, you're not. But really, you're part of the endless energy exchange of the universe.

Imagine yourself as a drop of water in a mighty river. When you're in the river, there's no end to your journey. But even if the drop seems to vanish when it merges with the river, it's still part of the flow, just in a different way.

So, don't worry about death. You're always connected to the universe's energy, no matter what form you take.
