I'd say it varies. I believe we all do many low/medium/high time pref things over the course of a year. High isn't bad. Low isn't good. It depends.

reply

I agree - and this is something i want to get to eventually

For now my question is on average, from an outside observer's point of view

reply

Medium. There are things that I want that I know are luxuries but I'm saving up for them instead of being financially irresponsible.

I don't know. I've always thought of Low Time Preference as being frugal on everything. I'm not at that point, yet.

reply

What kinds of things can a person be frugal on?

reply

Well, I think it depends on what you consider as essential.

Personally, I think it's about spending less on frivulous things. Maybe I'd consider getting something cheaper or perhaps focus on repairing things that I have instead of throwing them away, that kind of stuff.

reply

Hmm. What makes something a frivolous purchase?

reply

Well, that depends on you.

I have a set of things that I would consider frivolous, but those things might not be the same for you.

reply

Well of course!

I mean how can we create a shared definition of frivolous. It feels different from frugal. Distinct ideas. Just exploring meaning.

reply

I don't know but the results would be an interesting read!

reply

Can you please clarify what this means

reply

Yes! I think I was tired when I wrote that reply and it didn't make much sense did it?

In answer to your original question:

I don't know the level of time preference they would say that I acted in. So I would be interested to wait for the results and find out! I would imagine that if you had someone observing you for a year, that they would collect a lot of data about your behaviours and that in itself would be an interesting read!

reply

Ah yes! It would be the coolest!

reply

I think you have to be careful losing the forest for the trees

reply

This is very poetic but i'm afraid i don't understand.

Can you help clarify how this connects to an observation about one's time preference behaviours?
