I'd like to see a tl:dr synopsis, a little summarisation of what it is your bringing to the party

We all like to come here to SN and peruse the different territories

See what's hot and recent

Part of why we use SN is to educate ourselves and entertainment

There is a line between a post being more like an essay and becomes too much to digest or not enough to spark your engagement

We don't need AI we just need other humans to share their wisdom. AI is programmed by people who are very stupid. They have very little common sense. Literally they buy staplers when they run out of staples.

AI is programmed by the dumbest people on the planet. If they were smart they would and do work on Bitcoin.

AI is useful if you prompt it correctly. I recently looked up mainstream media news articles on a person that system really hates. Typically, polemics and unfounded claims. However, I asked the AI to remove all descriptions from a particular article and gave me what looks like a reasonable report that you'd get from an objective reporter.

AI is as biased as the training material in terms of content generation, but, AI is great for editing, summarizing, proofreading, and general content parsing.

Yeah OK up and down the freeway maybe but put it down a side street in Chicago in deepest winter with cars illegally parked and then see how it does 😆😆

If you check out the link post menu and go to options, you'll see a box for context. That box was only recently added after much prodding. Personally, I will not post a link without adding context, and I will rarely zap a link without context. Im not alone. Believe it or not, things are getting better in this regard. Check out @elvismercury. He is a master at this, and is also an advocate.

@cleaningup12, the best I can figure, this one is a combo of a) modeling the behavior you want to see ("be the change you want to see in the world" as per @ekzyis and also Gandhi) and b) rewarding it when you do see it.

Generally it's a fantastic experience on SN, the devs have got it in a great place imo, there's loads of engagement and when a post has context we can all relate to it goes hot very quick

That's one opinion..However, what's wrong with posting an article openly, which allows discussion, if any, to go in more organic directions? Posting with opinions leads or directs the discussion even unintentionally.

I think both are additive and necessary and I would not discourage either.

Good point here. Maybe people could just post a description which asks a question or questions about the piece they shared. I think that's a far more effective way to get a discussion going than just an outbound link with no context at all.

I didn't think you meant shilling. I am saying if I post a link along with an opinion or explanation most comments will respond to the opinion. Sometimes I want perspective on the article not on my opinion of the article.

Agreed i find myself doing chatgpt summaries of articles to decide if its worth delving into.

Even a 2-3 line starter comment would be nice.

Original posts are also way more likely to make it to the hot page

And there already are users exploiting that fact by posting link posts as discussion posts and only adding a sentence or two to the text

The recent tab is often 90% raw link posts with zero effort. Such low effort that it almost seems like a bot could have made those posts 🤖 🤨

I wish there was a way to easily filter link posts with/ without context added. I'd be delighted to miss each and every link share where the poster couldn't be bothered to write even 1 sentence about why it's worth reading.
