Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.
Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!
We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!
On the weekends I try to spend time coding outside. I used to mostly code outside recognizing I was more alert in a peaceful way in the sun.

Anyone know why the price spread on Strike is so high?
They advertise no purchasing fees and yet the buy price is always a few hundred dollars higher than the current market price...
reply
No purchasing fees on other platforms means the selling price is higher, you pay regardless.

Just realized that my obsessive edit disorder might be related to the culture at my previous company.
During onboarding, there was a section in Notion that explained the culture at the company. In this section, it was mentioned that editing of comments is welcomed and even encouraged. It said something along these lines iirc:
"If you think you can rephrase something in a better way, do it. We welcome editing. We won't see it as you trying to hide mistakes but as you willing to acknowledge your mistakes and correct them. It's always better to rephrase something if you think that gets your point across better."
I think that's when I started to edit absolutely everything if I had the chance to and thought it might improve my comment, lol
But I'm not saying this in a bad way. I think it's a good habit I learned. If I have to say one good thing about my previous company, it was how we organized async communication. Everyone respected each other's time. Basically, we lived and breathed the spirit of Don't ask to ask, just ask. We also used Geekbot for async daily "standups" very effectively and efficiently.
reply
I'm a big fan of tweaking, iterating, editing. I don't see anything sinister in it. Trying to think clearly enough to express yourself well is a virtue.
reply
I should have hashed what I thought you're going to reply and included the hash in my comment.
Because that's very similar to what I thought you would write and the reason I put you into CC to check :)
This is also related to deleting comments for me though. In the past, I saw deleting comments as hiding mistakes. But now I see it more as acknowledging mistakes. Not sure if that makes a lot of sense though. Since I am still hiding the mistake from future readers.
reply
Haha, well, nobody would dispute your prediction even without the hash, I'm too predictable.

So I just listened to McCormack's interview with Fran Finney. The guy is still using Ledger as a sponsor...smh... But this comment is not about that.
I had a thought after listening to the podcast. I was thinking of forming a Stacker News team on Fran's fundraiser site and help fundraise for the cause. But before I do that, I want to see if there is interest in the community in forming the team, because I would rather just make a personal donation if I will be the only person on that team.
What better place to ask than the Saloon? Also, if someone "official" like @koob, @kr, or @ekzyis would like to form this team and run the fundraiser, I'm happy to just join the team and donate my sats.
I'm personally committed to donate 1102009 sats, because the legendary running bitcoin tweet was posted on Jan 10, 2009.
So yea, stackers, let me know if you guys would be interested in joining this team and I'll create the team if I see enough interest.
reply
Ah yes, the curse of WBD sponsors continues: BlockFi, Compass Mining, Gemini Earn, Ledger...

That moment when you see people zapping your posts in real time via push notifications.
I just tried to swipe away some push notifications on my phone about your post stacked X sats but they just kept popping up again. Then I realized someone is currently, in this moment, zapping these posts with individual zaps and I got interested how high this number will go, lol
reply
I've noticed a slight delay between when sats add to my wallet and when the push notification shows up. It's just a little signal that I sometimes catch in my peripheral vision.
reply
iOS? I used Firefox yesterday (I usually use Brave which is based on Chromium) and I noticed that push notifications there arrive really fast. So fast, I was shocked how used I got to the speed of push notifications on Brave (they use a push service from Google). I didn't think that push notifications could arrive that much faster.
reply
I think you can see it on Brave. You might notice your balance change a second or two before you get the notification that someone zapped you.
reply
Ah yes, I think I just did notice. We poll for an balance update (among other things) every second. So I guess sometimes, the timing is fortunate and the poll actually gets a faster response than the push notification arriving at your device since it goes through an additional hop before it arrives at your device.

Hello there!!! 6.47 am here in this rainy Saturday in Playa and the air is cool, not bad for the last 2023 weekend, time to relax and get things ready for the upcoming NYE celebration. Get the grapes if you do the tradition, otherwise tomorrow there will be none, I'm not much of the grapes but I am more on the goals, 12 goals set and those have 12 middle ones and for those 12 small ones. Focusing on the small ones and at the end of the year see if the long term ones were accomplished. One step at a time my friend. I wish you an incredible Saturday, may it be filled with love, relaxation and prosperity. Thank you for existing and for being so awesome!! You're important and what you do matters, I'm so proud of you, my friend and as always, be well and stay frosty. Hugs!!

Zap to zero day 3

Total satsback so far: 7911 sats (4419 sats yesterday)
does not include people zapping me over the day
Seems like ~crypto is entering the bull market, too. But I think it's mainly thanks to @kr's post about Making Ethereum Cypherpunk Again which generated a lot of zaps - not only on the post itself but also in the comment section. I will use these sats to Make More Things Cypherpunk Again.
Also yesterday, the code has decided that it's time to reward content and not zapping, unlike yesterday. Got almost exactly 1k more sats for posting than for zapping. I feel proud.

Total zapped so far: 29.1k (16.1k yesterday)
There might be another bug in our statistics. And I am not talking about unseating @Undisciplined from his third place - famous last words btw:
I will always have been the 3rd highest zapper for that 24 hour period. There's nothing you can do about it.
but that it showed that @Undisciplined made two posts yesterday but he didn't make any post, lol. Probably a time zone issue. Hopefully.

XP points gained so far: +14 (+10 from yesterday)
Unrelated to this experiment, but yesterday, @TonyGiorgio created a ticket and I was confused how paying the same invoice twice might lead to a loss of funds. Fortunately, he had patience with someone like me and quickly reminded me that preimages must be kept secret until the channels are closed iiuc:
Preimages are revealed to node routers when an invoice is paid. If they see the same payment being routed again with the same prrimage, they can swipe the funds.
Ah, makes sense. Forgot that the preimages must be kept secret until the channels are closed - not until the payment is done.
However, tbh, I am still slightly confused. If they already have seen the invoice, they already know the preimage, so how does seeing the same invoice again lead to a loss of funds exactly? But I think I knew the answer to this in the past while reading Mastering The Lightning Network. So I think the answer is somewhere in this book. It's a great book to just look some stuff up quickly. I just didn't yet. (It's even free to read in digital form.)
Regarding the experiment, I again had to stay up late to zap to zero.
To cut it short, here are my last zaps again. I really don't mind to tell people what content I zap on SN. Maybe I should mind? But at least what you can see here is only stuff that shouldn't be too controversial, right? Right?
As you can see, the last zap was again probably a "I am really tired"-zap.
Btw, keep in mind that these are my personal zaps. Read this as a disclaimer like this one from @niftynei's blog:
Opinions are my own and exclusively reflect my beliefs and lived experiences.

reply
This project highlights the problems with invoice reuse: https://github.com/dark-ln/preimage-stealer
Invoice reuse is basically preimage reuse which is basically reusing secrets that have already been revealed previously.

I think my zap to zero posts are too big for the saloon, lol. I think I really should do separate posts for them. Then I also wouldn't have to wait for the new saloon to show up. But I think @elvismercury didn't mean daily posts.
But does that matter? :)
reply
I don’t think it matters if they are long form. No one is forced to read them!
If you are going to post separately can I request you add a link in here please? Need to keep encouraging these types of challenge!

Great idea! Haven't decided yet though. Creating regular posts about this every day feels like asking for much too much attention. But it's probably just me.

I've noticed that some people are good at being told what to do, you might want to have them do the repetitive and less creative things. And some are at their best when being left alone and do what they are good at, you might want to have them keep moving things forward and explore the unknown.
The art is how to blend in each types and make the best of both strengths.

I updated the description of ~crypto because of an argument if the Make Ethereum Cypherpunk Again post from @kr post belongs in ~crypto or not:
Let me know what you think!
Defining what ~crypto is not about is more an ongoing process than something that is already determined by me.
reply
I was confused. Maybe this would be a great example of a territory that needs sub territories. One for crypto technology, one for crypto news, one for each shitcoin... but this would be very expensive to maintain. Unless subterritories have a lower price than the parent territory.
reply
how can you handle so many territories? πŸ€”
reply
I like all three of them! They are like children for me.
But ~oracle is my firstborn. Maybe that means something.
reply
so many children - need to commit less so to nurture the best:)!
I'm curious to see how many territories left after one month.
reply
I too am curious….

The way I see it is this: the same thing as doing business: you don't need to register a company so to start the business, you can just start by doing, with testing/small things! so why not just make good content to start, you don't need to own any territory so to make great content! and if it comes to a time you feel like bringing things to the next level, then go for it - don't waste too much time on the shell at first.
I guess the end goal for all of us is to have fun and grow, just different paths to make it happen, so find out the one that work for you and enjoy along the way:)
