The unspoken expectation to always be available for communication.
Text, email, phone calls, FT -- there are countless ways we stay in contact with people, and it's exhausting to feel on call 24/7, at least for me.
Humans have been around for 200,000 years, but we're only now in the last ~30 years supposed to adapt to this newfound interconnectivity. My brain doesn't like it.
Driving everywhere.

i just want more biking and more walkable cities, is that too much to ask?
reply
No, you're asking too little. 😄 Cars shouldn't be allowed in city centers.
reply
Firstly, cities are shitcoins. Secondly, I spent years driving around a major city visiting customers, suppliers, training employees, working projects at up to 30 plus sites across the city. Most days I would be at 4-5 different locations, often carting tools, equipment, supplies with me. I spent hours driving to get to back and forth from the places I had to be. Even if it was feasible to take some form of transit with all the crap I had to lug around, it would have taken me at least 3 times as long to get there.
So then you say. Ok it's understood that goods need to enter the city centre so we still need trucks and we need construction and maintenance people and people who need to work at multiple sites not easily accessible by transit to be permitted to bring cars and trucks into city centre but no one else. Who enforces this? Are you going to have to register your vehicle for city access and then have surveillance tech or cops monitoring every car/truck coming in?
reply
Tolled drivable service tunnels is one solution
reply
Fair if you are planning a new city from scratch. Nightmare if you want to redesign cities in this way.
reply
For sure. I'm consciously being unreasonable 😂
reply
Firstly, suburbs are centrally planned shitcoins. Secondly, if the biking/transit infrastructure is good there is no need for any laws or enforcers whatsoever. People use the better transportation on their own - incentives like in Bitcoin.
So then you say. Ok then this even leaves more room for those that actually need a car - making the transportation better for everyone no downsides through market incentives.
reply
A car in almost all instances when you have to travel more than a 15 minute walk to your destination is better transportation than buses, streetcars, subways. Biking is a nice option if it isn't excessively hot, cold, raining or snowing.
Suburbs are like bitcoin held with a custodian. Better than shitcoin cities but still not perfect.
reply
Suburbs are like a shitcoin: centrally planned, using huge amounts of space inefficiently and trapping people in their NPC pre planned lives like it traps shitcoins in crap pyramid schemes.

I grew up in the suburbs and it was quite a lovely childhood.
I lived in the city for 20 years and it was great when I was in my 20s. Less great in my early 30s. Kind of shit with a wife and one kid and just total shit with a wife and two kids.
I mean if you like your kids crossing major throughways at rush hour to go play at the park with their friends where degenerate druggies left their needles and beer cans from the night before (and this is in one of the nicest areas of the city) or having your wife and newborn baby who have been up all night woken up at 7am to jackhammering because they are building another ugly ass concrete, steel and glass shoebox container next to you. If you like paying $1200sqft for your shoebox. If you like driving around in insane traffic and construction delays every day or riding subways and buses with crazy people, drunk and high people, people who smell like they haven't showered in a month. If you like every place you go being totally packed and taking twice as long to get food or groceries etc because lines are insane. If you like your surroundings to be concrete, steel, glass, flashing lights, garbage and filth.
Then cities are for you. More power to you. Personally I believe most people who live in cities just suffer from stockholm syndrome. There are certain jobs, industries, lifestyles that really suit cities but I am certain at least 50% of people who live in cities would be a lot happier if they just got the fuck out.
The feds are getting a nice 15 min city complete with biometric cbdc payments and curfews ready for you bro
reply
What are you talking about. Car-infrastucture LITERALLY forces you to have an identifying license plate on you all the time. They're also a real PRISON dependence on your car.
reply
Fifteen-minute city paranoia is weird. Oh no, not resources within walking distance! The horror!
reply
Exactly. It also leaves MORE room for those that actually need a car. It literally is in the best interest of everybody.
I think what's going on here is tribalism. And suddenly bitcoiners support big government conservative or big government communist talking points because "the other team" likes it. Mindless low-IQ tribalism

Imagine unironically defending the idea that government should start locking people into a city for their own “convenience” and banning motor vehicles.
There is no way to build a new town/city without roads and vehicle access.
Plenty so called bitcoiners just undercover bootlicking statists.
reply
Imagine unironically wanting to be locked into a desert where you can't escape except through a single highway road with a machine and gasoline
start locking people into a city
Are you an idiot? Cities have thousands of roads in&out. Suburbs are easy to be locked because a single road leads to the highway and few gas pumps are enough to centrally contol a whole region.
and banning motor vehicles.
Nobody wants to ban them. You can own one and drive where ever you want. And due to people doing this more rarely you have more space on the road when you do so.
Plenty so called bitcoiners just undercover bootlicking statists.
You're just a communist wanting big government to plan your life and control your life like a barbie-dream-house with pre-planned daily lives.
Internalized communism makes you want the government to plan your whole life beginning from the walmart you go to, which gas pump you use and where you are allowed to live your live in a square of 2k sq ft. I actually cannot comprehend how you want such a NPC life as a brick in the wall
reply
internalized communism because I'm arguing for free market city planning. right.
or do I have it wrong? HOW are you supposing these "car-less" villages are going to set up???
I wonder who’s gonna MANDATE your brilliant plan? Ngmi with that attitude bro
reply
Suburbs are the most government planned and centrally controlled places ever.
If you let free market economy decide investors always decide to use space like the free markets is willing to buy it - which is never 2k sq ft prison cells
reply
please explain reality then genius and how your plan of mandating city design BY THE GOVERNMENT is going to improve anything?

Suburbia is the most authcon dystopia imaginable. They don't know how awesome nature without people everywhere is. They don't know how awesome city life is. They don't know the feeling of leaving a city with a car to get into nature or the next city instead of an endless hell of houses and lawns until forever you can't escape from.
reply
Great idea just get rid of people’s homes and put them all in mega apartments so you can enjoy your “nature”?

Storing your wealth in the form of a house.
People talk about building equity, but they never bring up (a) rising house prices is a recent phenomena, and (b) housing prices crash every 7-11 years. They look back only 40 years, and they simply ignore all the crashes during those 40 years.
It's especially frustrating to talk to people older than me who completely forgot that the Great Recession happened. One real estate guy (who's almost double my age) had the audacity to argue that house prices never go down -- he of all people should know better.

Wearing shoes everywhere.
reply
Especially shoes inside the house. So dirty.
And shoes that are narrow in the front or point like a triangle. When you bend the front of your foot while walking, the toes SPLAY OUT much wider than the heel. That natural position is completely blocked by "normal" triangle shoe shapes.
reply
i want shoes when im out on the streets/in the city/populated areas. Don't wanna step on something sharp. I hate them when in sand/grass/dirt etc. of course.
reply
There is a middle ground, which is sparsely populated areas - in first world countries these typically don't have sharp needles lying around.

Here's one I completely changed my mind about while visiting China: expecting everyone in a public area to stand aside and wait for you to take a family picture.
Clearly, the family holding everyone up is the selfish party, not the many other people trying to go about their business. If you want to stage a family photo in a crowded place, you can wait for a break in the crowd or take an authentic picture with randos walking through the frame.
reply
agreed, def try to stay very aware of this when Im traveling too.
It's the same energy as people at the gym expecting others to wait/move aside while they record their random video
reply
Do as the Chinese do and just walk right through: you're not the asshole.

Recently realized how suddenly society shifted to people wanting to be liked by everyone.
There is nothing "wrong" with being disliked by other people. In fact, it is even impossible to please everybody.

Two cars are waiting at a traffic light. The car at the front doesn't realize the light just turned green. The driver behind him (yes, they are both dudes) immediately gets pissed and holds down his car horn. The dude at the front looses his shit, doubles down on his car horn, then purposely takes his sweet time to cross the intersection.
