While awareness of Bitcoin is growing, mainstream adoption remains a challenge. The user experience for newcomers can be complex and confusing, and the lack of user-friendly interfaces may discourage potential users from entering this space.
Will bitcoin ever be as easy to use as paypal, cashapp, etc.?
Not sure why people still think BTC is hard to use. Quite literally the easiest way to pay for things out there.
More techy stuff that you can do with bitcoin that shitcoiners scapegoat as their excuse to use their "alternatives" doesn't negate the fact that I can send and receive money instantly without any need for an account or transfer of personal information
reply
I agree, very easy / much easier than I expected it would be. A lot of would-be newcoiners get scared off or just lose their attention as soon as they hear words like “seed phrase” “private key” “public address” etc. I think adoption would accelerate dramatically if these terms were replaced globally with something more user friendly - “secret passphrase” “private/secret account number” “public account number / or public routing number”

Change non-custodial wallet —> self-custodial wallet or self-managed wallet
Change custodial wallet —> externally-managed wallet

the whole "custodial/non-custodial/self custody" clusterfuck is definitely a confusing one. why did we agree on this guys
reply
i don't know if it's a terminology problem so much as just a sheer amount of new information, can definitely be intimidating for newcomers

Lightning apps are EASIER to use than PayPal and CashApp. And they don't require you to give them your bank account, or ID. And like those apps, lightning is an analog for the base layer, except lightning Bitcoin actually exists, and PayPal dollars are just FIAT.
reply
Well, I think non custodial LN wallets are not easier. Learning about backups and being responsible for yourself without a customer support when you fuck up is def nothing for a lot of people.
reply
Also, basic bitcoin layer 1 wallets are as easy as CashApp or PayPal. They simply don't offer all the different services those centralized FIAT companies do.
reply
You brought up PayPal and CashApp. I compared lightning to them. They are custodial financial services. Give me an example of a non-custodial financial service and I can try to compare Bitcoin to that.
reply
Of course there isn't. But non custodial bitcoin is one of the main selling points of btc, that's why I mentioned it. Do you think no matter how crappy the UX of a non custodial app is, we can't compare it to traditional financial services because they are custodial?
reply
Bitcoin could eventually become as easy to use as traditional payment platforms like PayPal and Cash App, but several challenges must be overcome. Enhancements in user interface and experience are crucial, as complex interfaces have been a barrier to entry for newcomers. The integration of regulatory compliance without overly complicating the user experience is another key factor. Education and clear guidance on Bitcoin’s use, security, and benefits will aid in adoption, and collaboration with traditional financial institutions may provide an easier entry point. The technological challenges related to scalability, transaction costs, and security must also be addressed, with solutions like the Lightning Network offering promise. While the pathway to making Bitcoin as user-friendly as mainstream platforms is complex, ongoing innovation, development, and a focus on user-centric design could lead to this becoming a reality.
reply
Yes. Form follows function… its popular interface will become what it needs to.

UX and Accessibility in FOSS is often quite lacking. There are a lot of things I think can be done to make interfaces for wallets, nodes, and hardware easier to use for the average person. Lots of low hanging fruit out there. I think what the Bitcoin Design Guide team is doing will go a long way to bridging some of those gaps, but it is also good to see increased lightning bounties some even for accessibility (in the sense of user centered design for people with disabilities). It is my hope to start working on some of these projects to help make them more accessible and useable to the average person regardless of technical proficiency or ability. I think a lot of the hard problems around security, key storage, and bandwidth issues have been at the forefront out of necessity, but as these problems are solved and new applications are built on top of bitcoin, the adoption will increase tremendously in step with increased usability. The incentives are built within the sound money nature of bitcoin itself. This drives people to want to work for bitcoin just as much as people want to get paid in bitcoin. I also believe bitcoin bounties that solve these problems will become more and prevalent as time goes on.
