Just so everyone knows - posts that are against the Iran war are getting heavily downzapped.

This one below (#1464032) was downzapped 7566 sats.

If you look at the weekly top downzaps, 4 of the top 10 are anti Iran war or anti war crimes.

You can look at downzaps by going here - https://stacker.news/top/posts/week?by=downsats.

I actually made myself a browser extension, that puts the downzaps right next to the main buttons (Lit, New, Top), so I can check it easily. That's what you're seeing on the screenshot.

Is it anti Iran war or just Solomonsatoshi?

reply

I think we've got at least two ideological downzappers lurking. SS is just one of them

reply

Yes, there’s definitely a well known Bitcoin personality who downzaps anything critical of either Ukraine or Israel.

reply

You think it's Todd? Maybe. If so, all of us combined couldn't stop him from controlling the feed with his stack.

reply

@0xbitcoiner did some sleuthing and worked that out

I don't know. I think he would be more upfront about it. He would enjoy pissing everyone off. Also, if we're invisible, who can he argue with?

reply

The 'new' filter + wildwest mode is the way, there's no moderation there! Sats war gets you nowhere. Poorly spent sats! But it's all good with me 🤠 ~lol

reply

I actually get some enjoyment out of making censorship more expensive.

Well, at the same time that one post was downzapped 5k, he was the only one who had spent 5k.

reply

Pretty good evidence. Perhaps some government alphabet agency hijacked his account.

I downzapped previously because some respondents refused to engage in the facts and issues I was raising in a constructive reasoned manner.
Call that ideological if you like.
This current downzapping is someone trying to prevent a specific topic being discussed or even known about.
There is a difference imo.

reply

Definitely anything that is anti Trump, anti war, anti Israel - it's being downzapped

reply

Maybe a bit of both but most of my posts recently do not get downzapped... not until this topic of the war and The Greater Israel Project.

I had never heard of TGIP before last week and was shocked by what it seems to be and thought others might also find the topic interesting, if not shocking...especially given the current situation with the war.

Have never seen the topic covered by MSM though maybe it has been and I missed it?

neat.

reply

Thanks. You can use the browser extension yourself by following the instructions here: #1453394

I initially zapped 25 for the followup, thinking I prob would have to decompose your tool to work in my various pricacy browsers.

now that I see your method of publication, I'm zapping 1000

very well done. thanks, @Signal312

reply

Thank you! I'm just happy somebody is using it.

reply

hello?? users are having to make their own extensions to use your site effectively.

the "money is the moderator" experiment has failed

reply

if it has failed, what does another sort fix?

reply

I heard adding filters are all the rage these days... :)

"Effectively" or "for interesting thought experiments?" That's what the sort by downzap feels like to me.

reply

I love it when @anon makes suggestions

I mean zaps and downzaps are just thumbs up and thumbs down for what you feel about a post.

reply

Sort of, but downzaps have generally been used sparingly and mostly targeted bots/spam.

Downzapping real content isn't the norm and means someone is trying to suppress a particular viewpoint, which is fine but also worth highlighting.

reply

All my memes about tranny shooters get downzapped in saloon or ~lol

reply

That’s just your cross to bear

reply

good timing, yesterday was Good Friday

my cross to bear vs my downzappers cross to bore

reply

It does seem to me that people see downzapping as a tool for activism (viewpoint manipulation or targeting ideological opponents), as opposed to a tool for signaling personal dislike.

That makes sense. If I see something I personally don't like, it's easy enough for me to ignore it.

But if I see something that I not only dislike, but don't want others to see, then I may choose to downzap it.

All in all, I think it's pretty effective for viewpoint suppression. I don't remember seeing some of these posts. Unless I catch it on New at just the right time, I probably won't engage with it.

reply

Yep, it's a powerful and valid use of money to moderate content.

I'm interested to see what norms develop around this. Occasionally, I check the top downzaps and boost stuff back up if I want it to regain visibility.

reply

Is it a valid way of moderating content? Why should someone else's downzaps influence post visibility for me?

There is certainly an interesting framing of the front page of any message board as "The Commons". I'm sure someone has already written something about this somewhere.

reply

Why should someone else's upzaps influence post visibility for you?

@k00b can you confirm whether downzaps have diminishing returns like upzaps?

reply
67 sats \ 2 replies \ @k00b 4 Apr

Neither have diminishing returns.

1 sat = 1 sat regardless of:

  1. the person spending it
  2. the number of sats the person (or anyone else) has already spent

They shouldn't, necessarily.

reply

I do prefer the personalized feed based on bilateral trust, at least conceptually.

Still, absent other information, upzaps - downzaps will be a decent signal of quality if your preferences align with those of the zappers.

No it's not just an upvote/downvote.

You can completely hide visibility of a post. It'll disappear from the default home screen.

#1464032

Has now received 27,966 downzaps.

Someone does not want Stackers knowing about or discussing The Greater Israel Project.

reply

Wow. I'm impressed. You should feel gratified perhaps that these have been so downzapped. I've thrown you a few sats to counteract it.

reply

Have to admit the furious downzapping did motivate me to boost the post more! - that someone wants to silence this information so badly indicates maybe it deserves to be known more widely?

Had never heard of The greater Israel Project before last week and it seems pretty surreal- not sure how much substance there is to it, but obviously someone does not want it known about.

reply

So, does that mean I can make money by posting anti-anti-Iran war content?

reply

I noticed that there were some big downzaps again today. I zapped one of yours back into visibility.
