Make it sound smart. I tell my no-coiner friends, "Bitcoin is just a public ledger of financial transactions that no one controls, anyone can write to, and yet somehow everyone trusts. We've never had that before."
They usually then ask, "why does that matter", or "how does it do that". Either way leads to a useful conversation about bitcoin.
The last person who asked me about it sincerely... asked me how it was doing. I said it was doing fine. Then I told him what I thought (think) is the truth that eventually we'll all be using it.
He said "and when's that?"
I told him "maybe in 10-15" years which I still believe.

imo, when people finally understand what bitcoin is and why libertarians like it (not just thinking of it as an investment asset), they are more open to it.

I can't even talk to people about what "money" is. Money (to me) is the agreed upon contract to produce work in the real world.
Why the fuck should we use pieces of paper for that???

eh, if your friends have no curiosity to even talk about what money is and what makes a good or a bad money, then they're not ready to hear about bitcoin at all. I wouldn't even bother with it.

In my experience it is a huge jump for most people. Even the very few people I have encountered who are into/own crypto... know ZERO about Bitcoin.
They like dogecoin or fartcoin or memecoins (or things I have never heard of) they want 'fast returns' on their Coinbase account. The idea of a Lightning wallet to pay for things might as well be quantum mechanics... the idea of an energy-based currency or digital capital never really occurs to them.
