Will Bitcoin move away from proof of work?

In recent years, many blockchains have transitioned to the proof of stake consensus mechanism, driven by factors like environmental concerns, energy efficiency, and overall system enhancements. Bitcoin is one of the few major cryptocurrencies still employing proof of work. While some view this as outdated, proof of work might not be as disadvantageous as commonly perceived. In fact, there are compelling reasons to believe it’s both secure and environmentally beneficial in the long run.

In 2008, Bitcoin emerged as the first cryptocurrency, marking the debut of blockchain technology and igniting an industry now worth trillions. It introduced the world to a decentralized, trustless, peer-to-peer electronic cash system — a groundbreaking innovation. At the heart of Bitcoin’s design is its unique Nakamoto consensus mechanism. Here, validators, known as miners, compete to process the next set of transactions on the blockchain. Each miner expends electrical and computational resources to solve a cryptographic puzzle. The first to succeed earns the privilege to forge the subsequent Bitcoin block, reaping transaction fees and a bonus block reward.

Proof of work is commonly criticized for several reasons, namely its gross and inefficient use of electricity. By some estimates, it uses almost as much electricity as the entire country of the Netherlands or ⅓ of Australia’s consumption. This has been a primary argument against some companies adopting Bitcoin, especially with the rise in the ESG movement over the past few years. Proof of work is commonly seen as a legacy blockchain consensus mechanism, only utilized for historical reasons and because of Bitcoin’s difficulty in upgrading.

Though these arguments have been used for years by mainstream media and critics of Nakamoto consensus, Bitcoiners stand firm in the belief that proof of work is a feature, not a bug. One major part of their argument is that proof of work is much more decentralized and trustless than proof of stake. For example, for someone to get access to the Ethereum ecosystem, they have no choice but to buy Ethereum from another person or entity, which could be prohibitive. On the other hand, Bitcoin can be acquired by using mining hardware and one of the most common currencies on Earth, electricity, and simply buying the digital asset. Anyone with an internet connection can mine Bitcoin, and though a miner may be expensive, it costs less than the 32 ETH to run an Ethereum validator.

Another argument centers around the centralization of mining, as it has led to the centralization and conglomeration of mining pools, where users group their computing power and share the network rewards. Currently, two mining pools could collude to take over the Bitcoin network. Though this seems threatening, Ethereum faces a similar issue with their liquid staking derivates platforms like Lido, which currently controls 32% of the total Ethereum staked. Since only ⅓ of Ethereum is required to reorganize the chain, granted at the cost of losing that ⅓ ETH, Ethereum is in a similarly precarious situation.

Though Bitcoin mining becomes centered around large-scale operations with warehouses full of miners, this is the economically most efficient approach as decided by the free market. Part of this optimization is using the cheapest energy available — clean energy. Indeed, some estimates place the amount of Bitcoin miners using green energy at higher than 50%, far greater than most industries. Bitcoin may use 0.2% of the world’s total energy capacity, but this number is nominal compared to the value it generates and the energy expenditure of our current financial system, according to Bitcoiners.

Proof of work is certainly not without its problems. Bitcoin’s block time is 10 minutes, partly due to its reliance on probabilistic finality and the rule of the longest chain being the canonical blockchain. On the other hand, proof-of-stake blockchains can achieve near-instant transaction finality and are much better positioned to be an internet currency. Yes, solutions like Bitcoin’s Lightning Network allow for free and near-instant transactions, but they rely on user adoption and do not support the long-term transaction volume of the Bitcoin network.

Even though proof of work has been condemned as an inefficient and polluting byproduct of Bitcoin’s legacy, the truth is much more nuanced. While it uses a lot of electricity, it provides a floor for the value of Bitcoin and is incentivized to be as cheap and clean as possible. Additionally, it gives anyone with internet access the capability to contribute to the network as a miner and earn Bitcoin in the process without having first to buy some from someone else. Proof of work will likely never leave Bitcoin, so we might as well break the narrative about it being such a bad thing.

Our Japanese counter part recently transferred a Japanese lady in her 30s who speaks good English to help my team with communication. Through our interactions with her, she often came cross as cold and sometimes even a little bit arrogant. Still I know my team really needs her help and I tried to build a good relationship with her with every opportunity I get.

Last week a few folks from my team were being rotated back to the US and we had a Nomikai with a large group. The lady happened to be seated next to me. I started some casual conversations with her and tried to build some rapport and hear some of her honne. I showed her my wife and kids Halloween pictures and shared some funny stories s when they visited Japan this summer. She started to open up a little bit and shared some of her personal experiences. I thought we had some good conversations. At one point her boss, a Japanese man in late 50s, came over to our table and put his arm around my shoulder cracked a few jokes with us and told me that she’s still single and I should help her to find a boyfriend. Jokingly I pointed to one of my team members who was sitting at another table and told her boss and her that xxx is single. xxx - the guy I was pointing to is a Hispanic American fyi.

I couldn’t believe what I heard next. The lady turned around, looked at xxx, turned back and said in English “I only date Caucasians.”

For a moment I thought she was joking and then realized she wasn’t. I think I had my mouth wide open for a few seconds. I didn’t know what to respond and I just laughed awkwardly and said Ohhh OK. xxx was too far away to hear our conversation otherwise it’s be even more awkward. I changed the topic and started to talk about something else.

Add this one to the list of bizarre experiences through my years in Japan.

Bitcoin is not for everyone!

The harsh reality is that Bitcoin isn’t for everyone, at least not yet.

Do you remember the first time you heard about Bitcoin? It’s likely you had one of three reactions. You either flat-out ignored it, called it a Ponzi scheme, or even considered it to be fake internet money that would never amount to anything. This is the reaction that most people have upon first hearing about Bitcoin. In fact, almost no one becomes interested in Bitcoin or can even understand its value or appeal the first time that they hear about it.

There is a popular theory in the Bitcoin market that the transformation required for a no-coiner to go from knowing absolutely nothing about Bitcoin to hearing about it for the first time, to finally investing in it takes at least 3 interactions with it. Either hearing about it from a friend or family member, seeing it on the news, or even having a life experience that forces them to learn about it. Recent experiences such as the banking crisis in the US, and also record inflation causing the value of our savings to seemingly disappear overnight. People who were affected in these situations were forced to finally learn about Bitcoin.

After you have completely fallen down the rabbit hole of Bitcoin, there is no going back. You view it as the future. Not only will it help to change the world, but it will also help to change our lives financially as well. You also begin to want to help Bitcoin grow and help protect the future of the people we know. This is why so many of us try to teach our friends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances about Bitcoin. On the internet, Bitcoiners are often truly excited and generous with their time to help people who are wanting to learn about Bitcoin.

We love to say that Bitcoin is for everyone, and that is true; just not yet.

The truth is that in the current world you either need to have one out of these three qualities to be interested in Bitcoin.

The first is that you need to be open-minded or curious. Most of the people who first got into Bitcoin were willing to listen to new ideas, and open-minded to what the future could hold. They were willing to take a chance on something as risky as Bitcoin, which had no guarantees. Being able to see how much potential it truly had.

The second mindset that you needed to have was to be interested in finance and investing. Unfortunately, while Bitcoin was much cheaper, not that many people actually knew about Bitcoin. It was only the curious, cypherpunks, or people that kept up to date on everything happening in the finance and investing world. Once these people became aware of it, they still needed to have an open mind to be able to see its potential and begin investing in it. Most people simply aren’t thinking about money or investing and are simply oblivious to Bitcoin.

Finally, the last thing that you needed to have to get into Bitcoin was a real financial emergency that happened to you. People who live in countries that have seen hyperinflation instantly were able to understand the value and importance of Bitcoin. When banks around the world began collapsing, a whole new group of people were able to understand Bitcoin. When the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out, more people learned, and the same with the Canadian trucker crisis as well. The sad truth is that most people won’t actually learn or become interested in Bitcoin until they really need it.

There will come a time when having Bitcoin isn’t thought of as an investment or even a high-risk asset. There will come a time when it is thought of the same as holding cash. When stores are accepting it, people don’t even need to think twice about it. That is the time when Bitcoin’s protocol will have progressed to the point. Bitcoin at this point will have already caused the largest transfer of wealth that the world has ever seen. Only then, will Bitcoin be for everyone.
