I agree. Technical skills are often lacking (in Europe too, not just the US), BUT... many companies have excessive expectations for new employees. This usually happens when they "already have" the employee they are going to hire (usually a family member, friend, acquaintance), and they formulate their expectations based on his/her competences, to make sure he/she is the "best" for the interview.
