China's Trade Balance for April, in Chinese Yuan (CNY) terms, came in at CNY689.99 billion, showing a slight cooling off from the previous figure of CNY736.72 billion
-
The difference was largely driven by an 8.1% Y/Y rise in exports, well above market forecasts of a 1.9% gain, despite easing from a 12.4% surge in March, as shipments to the US were dampened by Trump's tariffs.
-
Meanwhile, imports fell by 0.2%, softer than market expectations of a 5.9% decline, following a 4.3% drop in March. The trade surplus with the U.S. narrowed to $20.46B in April from $27.58B in March.
-
For the first four months of the year, the country posted a $368.8B surplus. During the period, the trade surplus with the U.S. reached $97.03B, with exports and imports shrinking 2.5% and 4.7%, respectively.

I'd imagine this is related to the surge in US imports, as people try to get ahead of the tariffs.
Even if the Chinese goods weren't going to the US, they might have been going to whoever Americans were outbidding for those goods.

I can't agree to this at all as tarrifs were already in place in April.
Here's more on the same from another source.

Tariffs on other nations have been postponed, though.
What I'm saying is that the surge in American imports diverted goods to America from wherever they normally go and those imports would normally have included more goods from China. The Chinese exports you're talking about may have replaced the goods that went to America.
Example: Americans buy clothes from Mexico instead of China. Normally, the EU would have bought those Mexican clothes, but they buy the Chinese clothes that are now available.

Well this definitely makes sense. I've also seen surge in trade activity between India and China in the last few months. Maybe that's also caused it.

+1 on this idea, because I myself was doing that.
As soon as I heard about the tarriffs, I jumped on Aliexpress to shop for drones.
