I had the best lesson with my form class today. Basically, I divided them into three levels of proficiency, gave them each an essay that matched their level and tasked them to use it as a guide to answer last year’s mid-year question.
They blew me away with their intense concentration. Everyone was hard at work, even the weakest writers. I was heartened that some weak writers swapped the words in my model essay with their own words. One bright spark impressed me with his original idea about how the organisers could have pivoted from the undesirable situation. Something about the use of social media to create viral videos.
I even texted all the English teachers after my lesson to share with them my soul-affirming experience.
After dismissal, some of my students practised hard for their upcoming dance performance. I’m not particularly good at dancing, but being the adult here, I thickened my skin (not a hard thing for me to do frankly) and offered them some pointers. I was again impressed by their ability to present their dance in an attention-grabbing way. Their ending pose was particularly noteworthy. Two girls stood on the legs of three male classrooms, not unlike seasoned cheerleaders. It was fun to watch them organise themselves and come into their own.
Rather rare to have such awesome days in teaching. Feeling unbridled joy. My chest is thumping with pride.
"Rather rare to have such awesome days in teaching. Feeling unbridled joy. My chest is thumping with pride." Sometimes you need days like this... that's when a teacher really feels that what they're doing makes sense.
