The Templars invented an early form of banking, making them the first international bankers. Pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land could deposit money at a Templar location in their home city and receive a letter of credit. Once they arrived in Jerusalem, they could redeem this letter for funds, allowing them to travel without carrying large sums of money and risking robbery. This system was revolutionary for its time and laid the groundwork for modern banking practices.
Didn’t they also do some raiding, murdering and plundering of caravans of pilgrims to Jerusalem, so those letters of credit never got used? Wasn’t this one of the reasons why they were hunted down and killed?

May be you are right, but in France, this version appears:
King Philip IV of France was deeply in debt to the Templars and sought to eliminate his financial obligations by seizing their assets. He also viewed their independence and power as a threat to his authority. In 1307, Philip orchestrated the mass arrest of Templars in France on fabricated charges of heresy, blasphemy, and other crimes.
Although Pope Clement V was initially reluctant to act against the Templars, Philip’s political pressure and threats forced his hand. In 1307, Clement issued a papal bull ordering the arrest of Templars across Europe. Despite investigations in other countries finding little evidence of wrongdoing, the order was officially dissolved at the Council of Vienne in 1312 for political reasons, not proven guilt.
Many Templars were tortured into confessing to false charges. The Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, and other leaders were executed by burning at the stake in 1314 after recanting their forced confessions.

Yes, burning at thee stake was a popular way to torture/kill opponents. Some say that the essence of the burnt alive person takes much longer to reborn, thus avoiding possible repayment. But bad karma is bad karma and if you earn it it is yours.

Some say karma is not about something good or bad that you did. Karma is the memory of life.
The word karma evokes different types of understanding in people’s minds. Karma means action. Action is on many different levels. There is physical, mental, emotional and energy action which we can call karma. If the action sinks deeper than these four dimensions, then we call it kriya. So both karma and kriya mean action, but karma is that kind of action which leaves a residual imprint or impact upon the system. This means the memory and chemistry of that action remains. Kriya is a type of action which imprints itself on a completely different dimension and begins to dismantle the karmic residue that has accumulated in the system.
