Undoubtably Twitter is where most Bitcoiners get their news. However, a lot of individuals (myself included) do not have a Twitter account and browse twitter through alternates (such as Nitter - a read-only version of twitter).
Should Stacker News automatically convert all twitter links to Nitter URLs?

I have voted yes, but what I would really love is to have the option. I don’t think manipulating the URLs by default is a good idea (can be seen as censorship).
However, having the choice, for instance, showing the links as: “twitter.com/…/status/… [ Nitter ]” (where the anchor text “Nitter” would link to Nitter) would be really nice. Maybe do the same for YouTube, Reddit, and so on.

Having the choice is the way :)
Agree. For those talking about extensions, some of us check SN on the phone and/or in browsers where it's not easty to get extensions. I'm not logged in on Twitter on the phone.
Isn't this better handled by an extension, thus leaving users the choice?
http://github.com/libredirect/libredirect
the extension allows for custom backends too.
As someone without Twitter, I would really settle for some button somewhere that I can click for nitter. I don't care where. Typically I go to the comments to see if someone posted it first.
Twitter users really don't understand how login walled twitter is for those without account. If I'm lucky the tweet loads. If I touch the screen at all or the scroll wheel, I get hit with login wall.
Same. However, in the event SN doesn't want to implement this feature I would suggest checking out a "Privacy Redirect" extension for Chrome/Firefox that will leverage Nitter (and other read-only platforms for other social media sites)
Or an account preference you can toggle within SN
This is the reply I was just about to leave as well! In Settings.
But I still like the Twitter embed, especially for videos, so that I am not leaving SN just to see the contents of the Tweet. It's only on the threads (and thus launching to a new tab) where I prefer to use Nitter.
So maybe even if I have the Setting for auto convert to Nitter left off (disabled), I can still get the Nitter for it. So for Posts that are Tweets, it remains the Tweet showing the Embed but there's also a launcher link/icon for the Nitter for that Tweet, so I can see the Tweet and thread in Nitter.
In the comments, same thing ... next to the Twitter link, automatically show a link/icon for the Nitter for that Tweet.
Good idea!
Could just be an option in your settings, so for embeds you can set to nitter vs twitter, keeps everyone happy
+1
I host my own nitter. So I would like to use my instance.
In general, it's poor form to share content that requires signup or imposes a paywall
I voted no for this, as someone who does have a Twitter account and engages with content on Twitter.
I don't use Nitter at all and would prefer to keep it that way.
Maybe. Automatically stripping the tracking code would also be a good quality of life enhancement.
FUCKING YES
Yes please
That would be useful
Twitter seems to stop me scrolling if its a thread
YES!!
And reddit should be converted to troddit
And FT articles / all the paywalled stuff should be auto converted to archives
This is more than just readability. It's also about privacy.
At the very least, the OP could get an alert when using such links about such facilities being available (should be relatively easy to scan for twitter / reddit etc links and make a corresponding frontend alert prior to submit)
Achive.ph doesn't have an API or any way to auto convert, as far as I can tell. Archive.org / Wayback has an API, but nothing I could see (from a quick scan) related to using the archive to request a snapshot be taken.
Nitter uses an unofficial twitter API. Feels janky and unreliable.
Also doesn’t twitter integrate with bitcoin??
What?
Maybe he is from the future where doge collapsed and Elon can no longer shitcoin.
Jack has been a huge proponent of bitcoin for years. Square, Spiral, LDK etc etc.
Yeah it has been there for a year. I don’t think many ppl use it bc no privacy, but Jack is obsessed with Bitcoin. https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisakim/2021/09/23/twitter-adds-tipping-with-bitcoin-as-it-rolls-out-tipping-to-all-users-plans-nft-authentication/?sh=17c7b2561dc6
