Freedom goes both ways. The individual has the freedom to take any risk he chooses as long as he harms no one else in the process. But the rest of society must be free from funding the consequences of the freedom of the individual to take personal risk. Legalize drugs and end public welfare for those who harm themselves by partaking in the drug culture.
The problem here is that society can't credibly commit to letting people suffer the consequences of their actions.
We could. It is just like being able to stop crime when you are armed. It stops crime but there is the possibility of a mistake, so what do you do? You make the choice and suffer the consequences. Shooting up should be the same.

There will always be people who are gonna vote for public funding to help people who are suffering, even if their suffering is totally the result of their own actions

Then you understand the problem is with those willing to have their agents point weapons at other people and steal from them, right? They couldn’t do it themselves, so, they get together and appoint an agent to work for them while giving the agent powers they did not have in the first place to give their appointed goons.

Yes, indeed. But of course they're not gonna see it that way. Too few people think about the nature of taxes and public spending.

Well, you can’t blame them if they have had their brains fully washed in the indoctrination centers for 12-13 years straight, not to speak of the extra 4-5 years of extra special brainwashing in post-secondary indoctrination. It has become a habit for them not to think, only accept authoritah.
