Rat!? Ahahah!
What about this dog looks like a rat? The ears?

reply

Rat hunter😀

I didn’t like the breed’s name. Poor thing, it doesn’t even look like a rat. It reminded me of the breed of the dog from The Mask.

reply

That was a Jack Russell Terrier. As @siggy47 noted in a comment above, the "rat" in the name is because these guys were bred to hunt rats.

reply

Even so, the Dachshund hunted badgers and didn’t have it in its name. “Rat” sounds like a derogatory nickname, but I understand the origin. Thanks for pointing it out.

reply

Heh. "Dachs" is the German word for Badger. It just sounds niftier when we don't translate it.

reply

My German is a bit rusty—just kidding. Lol.

Now I know a word in German.

reply

Like all terrier breeds, the Rat Terrier is an excellent hunting dog. Their specialty is rat (how surprising...as the name suggests)

It was bred in England specifically to protect against rodents that threatened agriculture. The breed proved so effective that it became very popular in the USA in the 1910s.

reply

I love this dog. Actually very similar to Jack Russel.

reply

It looks very similar to the Spanish dog called Bodeguero Andaluz.
