Even so, the Dachshund hunted badgers and didnât have it in its name. âRatâ sounds like a derogatory nickname, but I understand the origin. Thanks for pointing it out.
Like all terrier breeds, the Rat Terrier is an excellent hunting dog. Their specialty is rat (how surprising...as the name suggests)
It was bred in England specifically to protect against rodents that threatened agriculture. The breed proved so effective that it became very popular in the USA in the 1910s.
Rat!? Ahahah!
What about this dog looks like a rat? The ears?
Rat hunterđ
I didnât like the breedâs name. Poor thing, it doesnât even look like a rat. It reminded me of the breed of the dog from The Mask.
That was a Jack Russell Terrier. As @siggy47 noted in a comment above, the "rat" in the name is because these guys were bred to hunt rats.

Heh. "Dachs" is the German word for Badger. It just sounds niftier when we don't translate it.
My German is a bit rustyâjust kidding. Lol.
Now I know a word in German.

I love this dog. Actually very similar to Jack Russel.
It looks very similar to the Spanish dog called Bodeguero Andaluz.
