Since this concept is almost constantly mentioned in the btc community I have bought the book and will start it soon.
if you haven't heard of it, in general, a Fourth Turning is basically a period of crisis ( that maybe began around 2008 with the financial crash, and includes COVID-19, political instability, global tension, etc).
The theory says this period will end with a major transformation—a new system, generation of leadership, or social structure.
a lot of the directional predictions came true , apart from a financial collapse.
With globalisation and now ai coming after jobs, plus maybe end-game fiat, things do feel a lot more precarious than, say, 12 years ago.
what say you, wise men (and possibly 1 female) of SN?
Nope, we are in the 4th turning and Millennials and GENZs are in the front lines

Based on the theory of generational cycles proposed by Strauss and Howe, we are not currently in the Third Turning, but rather in the Fourth Turning. The Third Turning, known as the "Unraveling," is believed to have begun around 1984 and ended with the 2008 global financial crisis.
The Fourth Turning, which we are currently experiencing, is characterized as a crisis period that typically lasts about two decades. This era is marked by significant societal changes, institutional distrust, and potential for major transformations in social, political, and economic structures.
Key aspects of our current Fourth Turning include: Increased political polarization and social division Economic instability and wealth inequality Declining trust in institutions Potential for significant conflicts or crises
Some experts suggest that events such as the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and political upheavals in recent years are all part of this Fourth Turning period. The theory predicts that this cycle will continue until around 2030, potentially culminating in a society-altering event or series of events.

China has won the trade war. Trump is conceding that US decline is real and seeking to delay and damage control the consequences. He is saying to China ok lets carve things up into our spheres of influence. The end of western civilisations global resource hegemony may be imminent. China was 600 years ago the by far most advanced nation on earth. Western civilisation grew out of the intellectual foment of Christian schisms and the rise of science giving Europe a significant technological and ideological advantage over all others. Perhaps the world now needs a different style of leadership - one that can address the challenges of climate change and the inequality that western imperialism entrenched. Yes this is a time of tumult as we enter the post industrial era of algorithms being the drivers of concentrated wealth and power. Bitcoin - the one algorithm that allows the distribution of power rather than concentration and treats all participants equally without fear or favour is surely one of the few reasons for optimism going into in a future of increasingly uncertainty and turmoil.

I think there's a good chance that we're (Americans) about to live through a change on the scale of the Revolution/Civil War/Great Depression.
Does that mean we're in a 3rd turning? Maybe. I haven't read the book, so I don't know all that goes into a 3rd turning.

i've just realized that i should have said 4th turning lol the ultimate typo, that being said, handing over to gpt the classic definition of a 4th turning
A Fourth Turning is a period of intense national crisis that occurs roughly every 80 to 100 years, marking the end of a historical cycle. It’s when old institutions break down, public trust collapses, and society faces a major upheaval—such as war, revolution, or economic collapse. Unlike the previous era of fragmentation and individualism, the Fourth Turning is marked by collective action, where people come together to confront existential challenges. It’s triggered by a major event, like a financial crash or global conflict, and unfolds over two decades or more, ultimately leading to a profound transformation of society and the birth of a new order. Think of it as the “winter” season in the cycle of history—a time of hardship, but also of rebirth.
so i think you're on the money

The optimistic take would be that this one started in 2007 and is almost over.

i'd like to think so, although it sure doesn't feel like we're about to exit this phase anytime soon tbh

No, my guess is that Covid is a more likely starting point and we've got a ways to go.
