I didn’t watch just checked in on score was a close game which does make them more interesting
Sometimes a player will kick the ball down the field and his teammate catches it and the opposition jump on him. The ref blows the whistle and the play starts again with the same team possessing the ball. Why would they not use this strategy all the time like in American football. Complete a forward pass and go down and get possession closer to the goal. What am I unclear on or missing in the rules?
I did enjoy the game by the way. I am just a little shaky on the rules and strategy and find it a bit chaotic with so many guys on the field.

Yeah so if the ball is kicked and it goes the minimum distance and is caught (15m) play can stop and they can kick or play on ( hand pass or run ) when they stop and take that next kick that can give the defending team to get back and check the other players down the field so sometimes teams will move quicker to try and get down the field before the defender is set up. That make sense?

Yes that makes a lot of sense. I was thinking about how this might benefit the offensive team by allowing them to get set and run a specific play but didn't think about how it might benefit the defenders as well. Is it used as a strategy or just a situational thing? Do some teams try to move the ball this way more than others, while others prefer the uncertainty and chaos of fluid play?

Definitely and they do measure that I think in the Geelong Fremantle game . Fremantle was playing on 90odd percent of the time where Geelong was slowing the play down and not playing on when Fremantle was making a come back and the momentum was turning in there favour so Geelong slowed the play down on purpose to try and regain some control . Sometimes teams do this but get it wrong and move slow and results in turn overs and they get punished from fast moving teams

Makes sense. Sometimes NFL teams try to dominate time of possession to slow down explosive offenses as well.

A lot of the time if you go slow the other team will flood more players back to help defend. As everyone can go ahead of the ball if they want during play only time you have to have a certain number of players in each part of the field is at a centre bounce
