What hadn't occurred to me is that a highly functional and intelligent forum, like Stacker News, might be antithetical to influencers selling a brand of their own brilliance. Compared to the collective wisdom and knowledge of stackers, no one person can maintain such an exalted perch.
I think this is the biggest factor. I don't want to be disparaging, but when influencers get lots of zaps for posting GM! who can blame them for not wanting to deal with us? We're polite, but we're not going to reward platitudes for long, no matter who is serving them up.
Also, I think we have a little bit of an identity problem. We're both a hardcore bitcoin forum, and a place where territories run the gamut of topics. Personally, I'm feeling it now. 3 of my territories have nothing to do with bitcoin. I wanted to broaden the exposure to bitcoin of those interested in books, pets, etc, without needing to make the topics relate to bitcoin. At the same time, I find myself delving deeper into bitcoin.
Yeah, I've struggled to think of how to succinctly pitch that duality.
Something like "For everything bitcoiners love" is what we need to communicate.
