"Outrage fatigue" as a phrase is very new to me but the meaning isn't. I found a very good conversation about it dealing with every aspect of it.
Here's the link
A little transcript.
No matter what you believe, I’m willing to bet you’ve been feeling a lot of outrage lately. To me personally, it feels unavoidable: I can’t look down at my phone or glance up at a TV without seeing something that makes me upset. And that’s really exhausting. But when outrage is everywhere, what can we do to keep it from getting to us?
Feltman: So you recently wrote about this phenomenon called “outrage fatigue.” Could you tell us what that is?
Lewis: Sure, so outrage fatigue is kind of an informal concept, which basically refers to repeatedly experiencing perceived moral transgressions and feeling fatigued by them. So what that basically means is just, you know, you see something, you’re outraged by it, and over time you just become kind of numb to it.
So, I believe SN (or like) platforms help. But are there any other ways to overcome it?
How do you avoid "Outrage Fatigue"?
What outrage fatigue? Other peoples' outrage has me feeling pretty amped
reply
What about misinformation and too much information?
reply
For me, I don't really ever think there's such a thing as too much information. As for misinformation, I sometimes fall for it but I'm always willing to be corrected. I also think I'm more discerning than most people because I'm trained to spot errors in logic / misinterpretation of data
reply
That's cool. Maybe you can share "how we (untrained folks) should avoid it?
reply
I was planning to make a Pleb Economist post about "refining your bullshit detector". Maybe it'll be the next one... but yeah there are a couple of things anyone can do to get better at spotting unsubstantiated claims
reply
I love your Pleb Economists post. Now I'm already waiting for "refining your bullshit detector".
Would you like to post it here in ~healthandfitness? I think it'd be more relevant to HEALTH.
Do you have one or two books that inspired your bullshit detector that you would recommend?
You have to be aware of how you're reacting to stuff and whether those reactions are really proportional to the things impact on your life. We have limited emotional resources and we should deploy them wisely.
The corporate press and social media algorithms are intentionally designed to make us scared and angry, because that gets the most attention. That's why they need to be avoided. It's biased emotional manipulation, which is not to the user's benefit.
reply
You're definitely right about algorithms. It's however difficult to avoid them completely.
We have limited emotional resources and we should deploy them wisely.
Correct. I think we should limit our exposure to media and give preference to what we love.

reply
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
I think I probably have a bout of this
reply
You mean you also find it difficult to avoid them? Sorry I can't get what's "bout of this"?
reply
Yea, I also suffer from outrage fatigue
reply
For me it is easy but requires dedication: No Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube accounts. I have been doing this since 2020. I try to avoid political news also. I follow just a couple of people on Nostr. I just know what happens around me... Recently the Chinese new year. Nice decorations. Ski season is coming for me also. So no reason to be upset anymore. I just follow exchange rates for some currencies because this directly affects me so can't ignore it. But I save in Bitcoin so if politicians decide to devalue the currencies I use, in the short run I may be upset, in the long run I'll live with it.

Doomscrolling and outrage fatigue have one thing in common spending time on the media or internet, just go for a walk in nature ... understand this is a strategy to get you hooked, somehow we crave for drama and scandals, and then the platform will feed you with ads, and more dramas. Another thing is to filter social media (twitter/X in particular) and all polarized TV ; find support group, find positive people to talk to and join #nostr, find your tribe. You are on SN this is a good step forward already.
reply
SN is my resting place

Sometimes SN also gives you so much information which might blast your brain. Outrage fatigue originates not only from poor quality but also from quantity of information.
