Here's a total noob question. I'm running a purely private lightning node and am confused as to why the 'Spending Balance' fluctuates a fair bit even without any outgoing or incoming transactions?

I've explained here why "spending balance" can fluctuate because of commit fees: #803355

I appreciate you and I apologize in advance for the instances where I ask questions you've previously answered before 🥲

Are you running a self hosted node or hosted in the cloud? If the latter, you might be paying hosting fees? Or fees to keep channels open?

reply

self hosted 😎 I've seen it swing both ways, up and down so I tend to doubt it's a fee to keep channels open. Not ruling it out, just saying what comes to mind.

Do you have several channels open? Maybe your node is routing payments?

reply

Four channels, two for receiving two for spending - all marked clearly as private

Oh, I overlooked the purely rivate remark on you OP, sorry. 😂

All good!

It costs money to close channels. The node wants to reserve some money for that purpose. Onchain fees fluctuate. Therefore your spendable balance fluctuates a little bit.
