What Is This?

This is a recurring post inspired by discussions had by @Undisciplined, @elvismercury and others regarding evergreen content on SN. I’ll dig back into the past to try to locate some great posts that might be worth another read. I plan to release a new Golden Oldies every Tuesday.

Happy New Year!

Rather than wade through my favorites of the past and pick out two, I have decided to highlight the two top zapranked post of 2024.
Here are this week’s selections:
This was a controversial post by a smart developer. The text presents good arguments, but the discussion it elicited from equally smart developers is what makes the post golden. You will learn a lot about the lightning network by reading the discussion. I re-read it this morning. When it was first posted, the back and forth felt a little over my head. Today I could follow along much more easily. It goes to show how much we can all learn on Stacker News by just reading and posting and commenting every day. For the record, I am more optimistic today about the lightning network than the alternatives.
This is a unique post. It perfectly illustrates how incentives enhance engagement. I am pretty certain it garnered more replies than any post ever on SN, as stackers swarmed to win the increasing pot. Along the way some interesting discussions took place. I’m not sure if it was my imagination, but just loading this post seemed to slow down my old laptop. Enjoy!
Comments and suggestions are welcome.

The bitcoin experiment may drive a bunch of SN engineering changes to accommodate the infinite number of comments it's going to get! What a cool idea.
I remember a similar one where the winner was the person who zapped the second most sats at the end of some fixed period, or something like that. Wish I could find that one.
reply
Yes! I remember that one. Was that an @ek creation?
reply
No, I remember it being a guy who posted smart but unpopular things (e.g., he wasn't calling for the downfall of government and didn't think that btc would usher humankind into a paradise) but I haven't seen him since I've come back.

It was @Michelson_Morley in #289395. He left because of #313090. See #313182 for our view of the situation.
My more biased view is that he got triggered that we demanded more evidence instead of just agreeing with him on the spot with the shallow evidence he provided. He then also essentially started calling us unprofessional in this ticket about account switching. As with the plausible situation, my view is that he here also didn't like that I wanted him to explain himself better.

I didn't remember what a great incidental convo you, me, and @k00b had in the comments there. Thanks for surfacing it!

yes, we need pagination for comments, too

That post by @ken now take at least 2 minutes to load on mobile.
All those who're against incentive model for SN must take a look at this post.
reply
What does ken's post have to do with SN's incentive model?
reply
Engagement.
reply
You could mention "win 100k sats if you're the last comment within 24 hours" on reddit or nostr and it will also result in such engagement. This engagement has nothing to do with SN's incentives.
reply
So, you're saying that 100k on the rewards has nothing to do with engagement here on SN.
What makes SN different from reddit or Nostr then?
reply
So, you're saying that 100k on the rewards has nothing to do with engagement here on SN.
No, I'm not. I'm saying the engagement on @ken's post has nothing to do with SN's incentives, contrary to what you implied here:
All those who're against incentive model for SN must take a look at this post.
Or in other words: @ken's post is not an example of SN's incentive model.
edit: Or I guess you want to say that the 100k as the reward on @ken's post is like the ~100k daily rewards in SN's pool. But the rules are very different, which is why I don't think you can compare these two.
reply
I get what you're saying. I meant incentives always bring more engagement, be it SN daily rewards or ken's post or the sports pools in ~sracker_sports or the meme Mondays.
I simply meant that those who are opposing the daily rewards are wrong.
