Baby Stacker Corner #0Baby Stacker Corner #0
While doing the dishes, I remembered my interaction with @NovaRift this morning, one of our latest newcomers. They found SN via Mojeek, a search engine I have never heard of. It's always interesting to hear how people stumbled into SN. I hoped that they had a good first day on SN after my measly two replies. I also zapped them measly 20 sats because their replies sounded like someone genuinely trying to get started on SN but didn't want to zap too much to not immediately spoil them. 20 sats should be just enough to give them a taste of SN's sat flow.
At the same time, I knew that there must be many new stackers that I did not welcome in any way and thus missed out on many opportunities to find out where they came from or make sure they have a good start and aren't greeted with silence. I only reply to new bios when I randomly see them while scrolling through recent and the bio doesn't sound like a bot.
Then I remembered that one of the strengths of SN is that the site we're building is also the feedback channel from/to our users. It cannot be understated how valuable this is as was mentioned in this panel at 16:56.
So why not play to our strengths and create regular posts that welcome new stackers?
At the same time:
- we can ask them where they found out about SN
- ask them how the (non-existent) onboarding was
- ask if they have any good or bad feedback
- give them another chance to introduce themselves
- they can see how other new stackers in their "cohort" "performed"
Additionally, old stackers can:
- talk about their interactions with them
- check them out and engage with them
- zap the ones worth zapping
Since I didn't want to abuse my staff powers by directly querying the database to find out who our new sign-ups are, I simply used /recent/bios to get a list of stackers that created a bio recently. This isn't foolproof, but it will do. Here's the list:

@everyone in this list: consider yourself asked the questions above!
@everyone else: same + do you have suggestions for this new series?
sorry for all the newbies that didn't make it into the list, I didn't want to click on "more" one more time ...
Yooo! Appreciate the shout out bud. So cool to get some attention from the OG's (I assume og). So, names Seth, 36m, professional painter of cranes hence the alcohol n acetone handle haha.
I came here when I seen SN in my alby hub and remembered hearing about Stacker on and off outside of the realm, always good things. I am not disappointed and this community is one of a kind indeed. Real conversation, you can really feel the human element behind every post and comment. You guys have been amazing so far.
"Onboarding" haha was easy other than having some issues figuring out how to log-in with lightning but it's not imperative. As for seeing how my fellow newbies are doing, some of those guy are really putting the time in here and that's inspiring to see. Thank you again for the opportunity to introduce ourselves ek. Happy new year!!
Oh, that's cool and lol, totally forgot about Alby Hub showing SN as an app to connect to
Pardon my insatiable curiosity, but where did that happen? Nostr? 👀
Thank you for the kind words![1] I can also feel the human behind your comment :)
Ah ok, sounds like you figured it out quickly! LNURL-auth blew my mind when I joined SN 2.5 years ago. SN was also my first encounter with lightning. I think that's no longer the case for newbies 🤔
And oh, this reminds me that we still show some wallets there that don't make sense like Sparrow. Will fix
No worries, it's also in our interest that new stackers stick around :)
Also thanks for your feedback, this started better than I ever could imagine lol
much needed since the latest drama about rewards ↩
Groovy lil Q&A haha but I actually came here before I started using nostr, (just started using Amethyst yesterday I think) although I've had a nostr created in Fountain...Speaking of Fountain I heard about you guys on and off during my 40+ hours a week of Bitcoin podcasts
We used to run ads on Fountain. Apparently we still get mentioned occasionally anyway 👀
Yeah, I wanna say I remember those days but yes I can guarantee you when they get into it about the technology surrounding Bitcoin, SN, especially when they talk about zaps and value for value circular eco, gets its due cred . I think I even heard it on No-Agenda but don't quote me there, I spend too much time laughing.
Oh, found your post about the lightning issue: #825938
Reading the replies, I am no longer sure you figured it out 🤔
If it helps, I scan the QR code with Phoenix to login via lightning.
No I did not figure it out haha I just gave up and figured it wasn't imperative atm but I do want to figure it out if not just to be a cool kid too. I tried scanning in my Alby Hub but it always throws a code "can't decode the payment" or something very close to that
Alby Hub doesn't support LNURL auth (yet). You can do it with the extension or Alby Go
I gots me some Alby GO , let's see how that works
/cc @Alby @itsTomekK @saunter @MoritzK @bumi
Hey. I'd heard of SN quite a while ago, I think via one of @TheGuySwann podcasts , and had been meaning to check in and see what it was all about. I also was reminded of it when I was setting up Alby Hub for zaps on Nostr.
Initial onboarding, particularly with the NWC lighting wallet was a little clunky, but not terrible.
So far my interactions have been great, and I'm glad to be here.
Damn, @Alby doing better marketing for SN than we do haha
Do you mean the confusing validation since it's not clear that you have to setup two separate connections for SN in Alby Hub (send+recv)? At least that's a common issue we heard but we haven't gotten to improving it yet via a multi-step form for example.
Thank you for the feedback!
Also glad to have you here!
Yeah having to set up two connections for send+recv was a bit strange, since I didn't need to do this for nostr zaps. Alby Hub instructions do talk about it, but it isn't as clear as it could be. It took me a couple of goes to get it working properly.
I stated in my bio that I had been a long time lurker, but I actually can't recall where I heard about SN. It must have been a bitcoin/LN guide that I clicked a link for from somewhere.
Signing up was easy using login with lightning and I already had sats ready to use. What got me to finally make an account was because I wanted to test NWC with Alby Hub and SN was the app I wanted to try with most.
There was some confusion with sending credentials with NWC, which was answered here (#821817). I was also confused that the sats amounts received by my wallet was lower than the zapped amount but I was able to find an answer here (#692153). Once I understood the purpose of fees, seeing how well my first post was received, and receiving some sats from the rewards pool, I was able to understand the sats flow and see how it promotes good posting. Now I wish I signed up earlier and been an active user because you don't really grasp the economics and the power of SN fully as a lurker.
mhh, maybe from @DarthCoin? 👀
Does that mean you were able to find your answer via the search? Our search is usually not very good at that.
Mhh, good point, hard to understand SN looking in from the outside. A bit like taking acid lol
Yea, I found the answer via the search in SN, but it took some digging and persistence on my part.
I just joined SN today. Thanks for this post and the lovely opportunity to express our stories. I have always loved writing. I have written short stories, articles. I am software developer by profession. 30m. Love organic chemistry, mathematics, chess, spirituality and philosophy. Of late I was feeling like I am not getting any value for the energy I spent on writing. And then I started researching ways to feel more valued for writing. One of the most obvious ways was to monetize writing in some way. And I came across some advice such as write short content on social media, then create a newsletter to elaborate the short form content and also farm the emails of people interested, and then sell them a product/service.
All this seemed too long-winded and didn’t necessarily make feel like writing for the joy of writing. I have over the years been collecting SATS. And today it struck me if there was some place to write and earn some SATS. That way I feel the joy of writing, also feel valued with the return on investment such as SATS ! And after a quick search I found StackerNews ! And regarding onboarding the concept and ethos feels quite straightforward, which is to write interesting and engaging content and earn SATS. Still yet to receive my first few SATS here.
Yeah, web monetization is in a pretty bad state and we think bitcoin+lightning can fix this
Cool that we show up in search results! Do you mind sharing which search engine you used?
Definitely. I found this page that listed various sources to stack sats. And over there I saw StackerNews :) I use Google Chrome with Google search engine. Here is the article :

This is a great idea! Has anyone proposed doing something like this before?
Some of those nyms are familiar, but I haven't had much interaction with them yet (excepting the various aliases of Dave).
As far as I know that is not the case which surprised me when I came up with the idea. I was very disappointed that I had to come up with it haha
While going through the list, I also looked through what some of them were posting. There are some promising stackers in there 👀
So it's true?
I KNEW IT
I mean, I think it's true, but he was acting super weird. So, who knows?
@ek wao when I deployed the list and saw my user @Miranda I said wow, hahaha it would certainly be good to add all that information to the bio or interact more that way I think it enriches more the platform right now is my favorite, I sit at my computer to do my daily tasks and do not overlook my hours in SN seeing post and commenting on that topic my opinion, I really knew this platform through a colleague and his referral, already with enough experience in the bitcoin, and I have been impressed with it. Today I can say that being a stacker in SN is an incredible experience. thanks for sharing, sats for everyone.
in fact excellent idea to welcome new users and give them also a support about SN and how through LN you can receive their sats, plus tutorials about all this universe. and so is also educational which by the way is, just moderating new users or set a top topic on a step by step in the SN. for new entries. Super Cool.
I don't really understand, what do you mean? Which information? All information you can see here is public information I grabbed from profiles.
Thank you!
Me looking at the table and seeing my absolute colossus stats, while knowing I have contributed absolutely nothing of value to any discussion.
I'm mostly here to shitpost and share my penguin memes. For a more in depth BIO see bellow
that's okay, I have to admit, you are funny sometimes
Is The Penguins of Madagascar your favorite show?
Great idea, @ek. I like the idea of a quasi-cohort.
Some of these guys have come in super hot! That's an impressive sats / items count on a number of them.
Hopefully some more newbs will respond to your questions!
T-tthanks!
I like getting zapped 1000 sats immediately that’s my favorite, but not all are as generous as @grayruby
Wow, you were so humble that I didn't realize you work here on Stacker News. I thought you were just another user. Thanks for the Sats it helped. 20 sats are more than enough to get started. I really appreciate your help @ek 🙏
I prefer to let the new ones show their true face... after few posts they always show that face.
Just because are new it doesn't mean we have to start kissing their ass and throw with shit tons of sats on them, just like that.
@remindme in 2 months how many of these are still bitcoiners
im always interested to see in my SN updates that i referred someone when i have never shilled SN anywhere or even shared a link. I am going to start active shilling i think, people languishing on reddit when they could be here
Languishing is the perfect word for Reddit
The last time I visited Reddit was about find my iPhone after my cousin lost her phone while traveling in Thailand
Occasionally I will visit for mindless entertainment and laughs
Reddit Lies is one of my favorite X accounts to follow
i dip in for a look every now and then, but honestly, most of the places i would engage in , like the btc sub etc, are rife with censorship and things too.
Reddit hates bitcoin
I was blocked from a finance group for suggesting bitcoin as an investment. Someone asked a question about investing after a large inheritance.
Those mods are drunk on power
they are, the financial subs are basically butcoin, just a bunch of arrogant tradfi types that haven't made peace with the fact that bitcoin smashes all their previous models and rules
Excellent initiative @ek, we must support the little grasshoppers 🦗 who are new to SN. so that they can observe "Value for Value" and migrate from the Normie world to the world of "VxV.", that is, to the Bitcoin world. And there is no better place to practice value for value than here at
SN.Hey! Thanks for the shoutout and the warm welcome. I heard about SN through a couple of Bitcoin maxis who gave me a hat and told me about it. I love to write and thought this might be an enjoyable outlet to write articles rather than social media posts, newsletters, blogs, etc. I am going to let the direction my work takes me evolve organically but I like to write about Bitcoin, orange-pilling, and dating in Bitcoin. I am an NBA fan too, so some basketball might find its way into the writing.
