I was going to ask you if he's tanked his market value.
I'm not sure which other team is going to be interested in throwing $60M at him.
Raiders need a quarterback lol
reply
We have plenty of QB's. What we need is a good one.
reply
What do you think of Justin Fields?
I think he still has potential if he gets in the right system. I don't trust what I saw with the Bears considering how incompetent that franchise is.
reply
draft class of 2021 is cursed because of covid which made reliable scouting impossible
reply
Not just in the NFL either
reply
Kirk Cousins would be a better QB. He knows the Shanahan offense. Mike Shanahan drafted him in 2012.
Plus he is a first ballot HOF, Hall of Finance
reply
Cousins didn’t look very good this year coming back from his Achilles.
reply
He probably rushed his recovery. Footwork is more important than arm strength for passing accuracy
reply
I'm out. You guys basically had Fields, with Lance, and that didn't work.
reply
I get the comparison but I think Lance was always more raw than Fields and we have seen Fields be good at times in the NFL. Lance has never been good. All the talent in the world but doesn’t have the processing ability to be an NFL QB.
reply
Lance was a terrible pick because he didn't play in a power 5 conference
Poor man's Carson Wentz
reply
I don't like him for your offense. If he were Josh Allen's backup, that would be fine.
From what I've seen, he's a chuck-it or tuck-it guy. Expecting him to execute a complex offense isn't a good idea.
reply
49ers need a good back up for next year. Both Dobbs and Allen are FAs. I thought bringing in Fields might be a good idea especially if they don't extend Purdy right away and have him play out his last year. They can franchise tag him after next season as well so that would give them a couple more years where they can decide on Purdy but also bring in more of a project with high upside that you don't need to spend a high draft pick on. But I think Fields will get a starting job next year with someone.
reply
Fields can't see the field or read defenses and holds the ball for longer than 2.9 seconds.
I suspect Minshew could be had on the cheap. He plays much more in that style and probably is not actually as bad as he looked this year.
I don't think he has tanked it. He is 11th in QBR that's certainly worse than last year when he was top 5 but still in the top half of the league. 49ers have him under contract for next year so he can't negotiate with other teams right now. One would assume he and the 49ers will have a better year next year but if they don't extend him and he has a similar year I would agree it is unlikely a team would pay him 60M.
reply
I'm worried you're about to end up where we were with Carr. He flashed top 5 QB potential in his 2nd and 3rd seasons, but settled out around 12th-15th.
You end up in QB purgatory, paying guys like that as though they are premier QB's.
reply
Fair concern but that's likely a risk with a lot of guys. There are only a few elite QBs and then another tier of 5-7 guys that could have top 5 potential.
I do understand the argument that you always need to be trying to get a top 5 QB but I also think as we saw with the 49ers last year and the Lions this year you can get top 5 QB play from a top 10 or top 15 QB in the right system with the right pieces. I mean Goff and Darnold look like top 5 QBs this year. Who would have thought that was possible?
Shanahan trusts Purdy more than any QB he has had. I think that goes a long way. Ultimately I think they will sign him but I will lay out both cases in my post later in the week.
reply
My biggest concern is if they sign Purdy but don't address the offensive line. We know Purdy is small ( a lot of batted down passes), has small hands so he doesn't play well in inclement weather and is limited throwing downfield. If you don't give him at least a decent OLine you are just inviting defense to stack the box, stop the run and try to force him to beat you 30 yards downfield.
If you give him the Detroit Lions OLine he going to be the most efficient QB in the league.
reply
small hands so he doesn't play well in inclement weather
Oof, that's another major Carr red flag.
reply
This is a concern for me. They don't play in bad weather often. Maybe a few times a year but bad weather is likely to occur down the stretch and in playoffs when you need your QB to be at their best. He wasn't very good in the rain against the Packers last year in the playoffs.
reply
Fortunately, some of the top NFC teams play inside. It's basically the Packers that might be a problem.
reply
True. Fortunately only Seattle is an issue in the division. They don't have a lot of weather games but when they do Purdy is usually bad.
49ers in general play like spoiled Californians in bad weather. They all seem to suck.
I don't think you need a top 5 QB. The mistake is paying a non-elite QB as though he's elite. It just doesn't leave enough cap room to fill out the necessary support.
reply
I get this argument but didn't really want it to be the basis of this poll. The 49ers created 55M in cap space this year with a team littered with All pros and big contracts. They are among the best in the league at manipulating the cap. Of course there will be trade offs when you are paying a guy 50 plus million a year but I am not too concerned about their ability to manipulate the cap and structure the contract in a way that allows them to keep a top tier team.
reply
It's hard for me to not interpret Purdy, through a Carr lens.
I think it's fair to both consider him a franchise QB and not pay him like an elite QB.
reply
I agree with that but if you want to keep him you have to pay him at least in the range of an elite QB. I don't think the Cowboys should have given Dak 60M but that's the market.
reply
The market adjusts though.
After Dak, Russ, Lawrence, Danny Dimes, that dipshit in Cleveland, Carr, Kyler, etc. I think teams are going to be less willing to through money at QB's.
We'll see, but if I'm SF, I'm thinking about telling Purdy that he's free to test the market and report back.
