I ended up going the Bitaxe route. It was really easy to set up and now I'm in the mining game.
I'm glad I started small, because even this little miner is pretty loud.
After a little research, I decided to join the OCEAN pool, because they allow custom block templates. I don't have the expertise to do that yet, but it seems important for decentralization to allow it. Let me know if you have any thoughts about the best pools.
Is it worthwhile to set up lightning payments? It sounded like a bit of a pain to do so. I'm assuming all the payouts are part of one transaction, since my share is much less than a transaction fee.

Nice! I have one as well. I have it linked with Braiins pool atm, but may transition eventually. Currently earning around 66 sats per day, but I understand that he payout if a block is hit is shared amongst the miners, so that's the downside of it. I'm still learning little by little with the time I have so at least I'm participating in some small part.
reply
Are you taking your payments over lightning? I recall reading that it's easy to do that with Braiins.
reply
I am yeah. I have my Strike wallet connected to it! Very easy

lol, mining bitcoin without KYC and sending it straight into a KYC wallet 👀

Hey, I understand that. I'm still in the process of learning all of this stuff so

No worries! I hope you didn’t take it as a knee-jerk reaction. I just couldn’t help but laugh when I read it, so thanks!
reply
LMAO AHAHA
reply
Which one do you have? I have ordered the Gamma model I believe.
At the rate of 66 sats per day I will probably not join a pool, it's better to just go lottery mode outside of a pool, cross your fingers every 10 minutes and hope for the best, the downside of not making 66 sats per day is definitely offset by the upside in case you find a block.
reply
I have the Gamma as well.
Yeah, I can agree. There is CK pool as well https://solo.ckpool.org/
reply
I might switch to this.
reply
Don't you have a node at home? Like an Umbrel, Start9, Raspiblitz, or whatever else.
You'll have the best performance and will become a true sovereign Bitcoiner if you do so. Maybe you even spot opportunities to build something that could help others have an easier time.
An added benefit of these nodes is that you can also self-host a bunch of cool stuff so you need to rely less and less on external parties.
#justsaying
reply
No, I'm a noob who's just getting started. I'm sure I'll get there.
reply
Fair enough brother, you are at the right place, so that's good for you! :D
I've been reading some people who completely abandoned the path of using these miniaturized nodes and are using PCs, old laptops, etc, to run their nodes instead. Both Umbrel and Start9 have their operating systems open souce, so you can just run them and get all the automation and benefits they pack out of the box.
So whatever works for you, but if you are a curious soul like me you'll want to give some of these "guys" a try, you'll enjoy and learn a lot in the process.
reply
There is also this very helpful video about Datum and routing it directly to your node. I haven't done it quite yet, but I would like to - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ6Hax3wcY8&list=LL&index=16&t=3073s

How does it feel mining some sats?
reply
I like it, but it sounds like I won't get any sats for quite a while unless I set up lightning payments.

It should be possible to receive bolt12 into Phoenix wallet.
reply
Thanks, I'll look into that.
reply
52 sats \ 4 replies \ @ek 19 Dec
Since ACINQ pulled out of the US, you need to install the APK manually from here if you have Android. If you're using iOS, you can't install Phoenix in the US anymore afaik.
reply
I wasn't clear on how this works. I still have the Phoenix wallet I downloaded before they pulled out of the US. Does it still work?
I haven't tried to use it since the announcement.
reply
45 sats \ 1 reply \ @nout 19 Dec
Yeah, it still works well. But be careful to not leave too much there. Also there are small sending fees in Phoenix
reply
32 sats \ 0 replies \ @ek 19 Dec
Yeah 0.4% + 4 sats can be a lot for small lightning payments. But zero fees for receiving over lightning.
42 sats \ 0 replies \ @ek 19 Dec
I think it will continue to work, according to what I heard.
fwiw, I also used my Phoenix wallet in the US that I downloaded in the European Apple store.
reply
Whoa. You can create Bolt12 offers with Phoenix? I've installed Start9's StartOS, and then installed Bitcoin Core and CLD within in, because it seemed like the easiest route for a noob such as myself to go about creating a Bolt12 offer to withdraw sats I mined with Ocean.
reply
Dont you already have it set up for SN? Should be easy.
reply
You have to use a different set up that I'm not familiar with.
reply
If you don't want to go non-custodial, can't you use Alby Hub with an ecash mint?
reply
Alby Hub is non-custodial. I don't know enough about the rest to say if it would work. OCEAN is only compatible with Bolt 12 lightning payments.
edit: you mean ecash mint is custodial
reply
Ecash mints are custodial.
Alby Hub is a server you can run at home, so it's non-custodial in that sense, but you can connect it to an ecash backend. That way you don't have to run your own LN node and manage liquidity. Alby Hub acts as an interface with the mint, effectively disguising it as a LN node.
reply
Thanks. I feel like I'll need a level up before I attempt that.
More likely, I'll just disconnect from the pool and go into lottery mode.
Thanks for the mention. 🥜
Post it! You can milk the shit out of it haha Im joking, but see what everyone says. Never hurts.
reply
reply
How much did it cost? What's the watt consumption?
reply
I think it was about $150. It's running at about 17W.
reply
A Canaan Nano may be better value at about $USD170 it gives 4TB/sec hashing and uses up to 140 watts. https://www.canaan.io/nano/
reply
How loud is it? Can you give me something comparable?
I have been thinking about getting one but if it is going to drive my dog crazy I won’t bother.
reply
If the device works more than that, of course the fan will work quickly and will definitely make the fan sound quite noisy because it wastes heat on the device.
reply
It's a computer fan, running hard. I'm sure your laptop fan goes into hyperdrive occasionally. That's basically it.
It's not like a vacuum or anything.
reply
Ok not too bad. What is your projected daily earn? A few sats?
reply
Pretty much. I think my projected share of the next payout is about 90 sats right now.
reply
That actually seems like a lot!
reply
I agree. That's much higher than what I saw as estimated earnings, so there's something I'm missing.
reply
46 sats \ 3 replies \ @bren 19 Dec
Great job getting started! I wonder about how many sats per day the extra electricity costs. I guess you could figure it out when you get your bill. I'm sure it isn't a big increase, but just curious.
reply
I'm sure it would be cheaper to just buy the sats. I wanted to start mining, because I want to help the network. Any sats I earn are a bonus.
There's also the slight offset to our heating costs, as these things run pretty hot, but that's also going to be pretty trivial.
After a little research, I decided to join the OCEAN pool, because they allow custom block templates.
Welcome on the bright side of life! OCEAN is the best!
reply
Would you guys care to share the resources you used to choose the pool? I did read a few positive things about OCEAN, but I'd like to know more.
reply
I don't have a link handy, but I watched a Bitcoin University video about mining centralization.

Good. So far, it sounds like I made the right initial choice.

Ahh, missed this one. I just got my bitaxe as well.
Mine came on the 16th.
I'm lottery mining with ck solo pool.
If I was space heater mining again, i'd be with ocean.
reply
Have you thought 💭 about mining ⛏️ solo? The odds are against you, but the reward is big.
All you need to find is just one hash.
🤞
reply
I have. The expected value is actually a little better than being in a pool.
I largely wanted to join a pool to verify that I set everything up correctly.
reply
My Bitaxe is out for delivery today! I'm looking forward to getting it set up. Ocean looks like it could be a good option for pools.
reply
Mine took a long time to arrive. I hope yours arrives more quickly.
reply
I'm not sure how long yours took, but I ordered mine Dec 7th! It took them 5 business days to put a tracking number on it, and it's been slowly moving toward me since then.
reply
That's much better than my experience. I ordered mine in early November and it just arrived a few days ago. It didn't even ship until the end of the month.
reply
That would be a painfully long wait, I thought mine was bad enough! I assume each vendor has different lead times. I ordered mine from Solo Satoshi because they offer stackable cases if I want to run more in the future.
reply
I was worried it would arrive right when we left for vacation. Thankfully, it was so slow that it didn't arrive until right before we got back.
reply
Thanks for sharing and all the good info. I debated a heat bit miner awhile back but couldn’t make the ROI work so I just bought sats. That’s worked out for the better financially, but not on the education side. Good luck and keep us posted!

Fascinating... good luck and welcome to the Wild West 💪🤠 I hope to join the mining industry in 2025. With something simple. Do you have any resources for beginners that you can recommend to me? Thank you very much in advance.
reply
You could read through the comments in my previous post. That helped me make my ultimate decision.
FWIW, I initially wanted to get an Avalon Nano, but the shipping costs were insane.
reply
Good luck with your Mining, sir! You made the best decision.
reply
awesome!
Keep us posted. Sorry the hear that it's loud: I was a little bit under the impression that the Bitaxe was surprisingly quiet
reply
One man's "surprisingly quiet" can be another man's "surprisingly loud".
reply
You are happy, I am also happy, because something like this is what I have been waiting for, there is new information about using Bitaxe, how much have you got?
reply
Some, but I'd love to see any good resources you're aware of.
reply
but I've seen someone use solar power as their electricity source, they say it's more economical, but I haven't thought about it.
reply
@DesertDave has written a lot about his solar mining operation.

I know what you mean about them being loud. I mean they are nothing, nothing compared to an S9 but you can replace the fan with a quieter one.
I had thought I would keep mine in the office but ended up putting it in my server rack.
reply
It's in my office and I don't think it will really bother me, but I was surprised how loud it is.
I might try moving it out to the garage, at least for the winter. The colder environment might help performance, as long as the wifi is good enough out there.
reply
Good luck with the lottery! 🤠 By the way, thank you for your service to bitcoin.
reply
The lottery would be solo mining, right?
I considered that, but it was easier for me to see if I set everything up correctly with this approach.
reply
Oh, right! I read the post some time before writing the comment and forgot that you said you're mining with OCEAN.
reply
Which Bitaxe model did you end up going with?
reply
I ended up going with a Gamma, but that was mostly because my first choice was out of stock.
reply
What was your first choice?
reply
I think it was Supra, but now I don't remember for sure.
reply
That sounds viable. I don't really keep up with the models much but I've heard of both. Not sure which has higher hashing capability.
reply
The Gamma has more than whichever I was initially going to buy.
reply
Congrats!
reply
I am using ocean also because it seems like the best pool for decentralized Bitcoin. Have been for months and I can say that they do end up paying more with patience. You may need to set up lightning if your hash rate is pretty small. It will take a long time to reach the limit for a deposit into your on chain account. What is your hashrate? I am running 480 THs for 10 hours a day and it still takes months to get an on chain payout. I haven't set up lightning yet.
reply
I wondered about that, but I didn't see anything about there being a payout threshold while I was setting it up.
I probably should set up lightning payments, then, since my hashrate is much less than yours.
reply
I am not sure how it works exactly. I just know it takes me a while. Mine would be a lot quicker if I was running 24/7 like I am sure you are. I am subject to sunlight and batteries.
reply
I might drop down to 20 hours a day, because we have peak electricity pricing and it's several times as expensive for a few hours during the day.
reply
How much work do power do those miners draw. I never looked into them?
reply
It's right around 1 TH/s and 17 J/TH.
reply
Nice. That seems pretty efficient and it's enough to make some sats I would think. I guess lightning uses bolt12 on ocean. I haven't wanted to figure it out yet.
reply
That's right and I also didn't want to figure it out.

I also want a bitaxe for my own educational purposes and I think I’ll learn the most by using Ocean.
Have u learned how to clock down the fan speed yet?
reply
Learned how? Yes.
Have enough confidence to take it off Auto? Not yet.

True gamblers solo mine on Public Pool, go big or go home. I got my Bitaxe back in June, mined with Braiins pool for a few weeks but switched over to solo mining after that. I was getting about 49-50 sats per day during my time with Braiins. Report back on how many sats you get per day with Ocean?
I was receiving mining rewards via lightning by lnurl with Braiins. Also the payment threshold can be set if you don't want do receive payments everyday. I think I set it to 1000 sats.
I just went to Ocean's site and saw that they use BOLT12 offers for their lightning payments. To generate a BOLT12 offer, I think the most straight forward was is to have a lightning node running Core Lightning, as LND still don't support BOLT12.
I didn't find the fan that loud, but then again, I'm keeping my Bitaxe in the basement where we only got for laundry and console gaming.
reply
I'm thinking about moving it out to the garage, but mostly because it's cooler out there.
I probably will end up solo mining. I wanted to see if I'm receiving sats first, as a test of whether I set everything up correctly.
reply
If you don't have lightning payments setup, it will be a long time until you reach the on chain threshold. And even then, you have to deal with a small UTXO, which also sucks. I think if you're pool mining at home with very low hash rates, lightning payout is the only reasonable route.
reply
That makes sense. I'll look into receiving the lightning payments first and then switch over to solo mining.
reply
You don't have to worry about lightning payments if you go solo, as 3.125+block fees btc is a big fat UTXO and probably won't be able to be routed over the lightning network. If you ever solo mine a block, I think you can only receive the reward on chain.
reply
I'd imagine so. I don't have anywhere near that much inbound liquidity.
reply
Even if you have enough inbound liquidity, you probably wouldn't be able to find a route. We're talking over 312.5 million sats. Typical channel sizes are a few to tens of million sats.
Also, I don't even think the protocol allows for lightning payments when solo mining. Coinbase transactions (the block reward tx, nothing to do with the exchange) are always done on chain.
reply
Congrats 🎉 I also wanted to be there but there are so many limitations here that I had to step back. I tried hard out of curiousity setting up a Solar powered mining farm in my village but couldn't do it for security reasons.
reply
That sounds awesome. Maybe you'll be able to do that someday.
reply
Yes, may be. However the situation over safety and security has improved a lot in my part of the world but there are still thieves and Dacoits who break into houses or shops forcefully. This is still at play in vilages here. I have a perfect spot to start a small mining farm, but need to wait till I can be sure about safety of my money.
reply
I would like to try it, but not sure if it's worth the sats
