I was at McDonald’s yesterday and came across おすすめ in its menu.
Just what is おすすめ? It means ‘recommendation’. I was a good boy and followed McDonald’s おすすめ.
I got myself a Strawberry Frappe. It warmed my heart during the cold winter evening.
You can use it during daily conversation too. Just ask your Japanese contact: おすすめはなんですか?(osusume ha nan desuka?)
Now you are ready to consume the best of Japan since you have this handy phrase at this disposal!
Yeah, but you can’t ask someone who has a heavy handed sense of humor. I was told once to say to a beautiful young lady “oppai wo sawarasasete kudasai.” She asked me where I got that after turning as red as a beet. I never forgot that lesson, ever after.
reply
Good one! it reminds me when I was at school. You should try next "manko chinko unko". It means "you are pretty" hahaha.
reply
manko chinko unko I was about to comment something similar.
Did you know that when the Italians toast cheers and exclaim Chin Chin, they are inadvertently referring to the penis in Japanese!
reply
is it like “penis penis”? lol
reply
Chin chin itself means penis actually. In the past at work there was a Chinese person whose name was Chin chin hahaha (陳 something in Japanese, can't remember the name).
reply
Omg that’s unfortunate
My surname is Heng (which means lucky in my dialect). Unfortunately, it is へん in Japanese. My wife refused to take my surname when we married haha 😂
reply
Does that translate as “weird”?
reply
It does. Weird, bizarre. Chinese people or people from Chinese descent often have one Chinese character for their family name so pronounced in Japanese it can turn into something weird (pun intended).
Yeah, I can see why, how strange is that?
reply
I think that this is the diminutive term for penis in Japanese. Usually used for children and spouses. There is another term for adults, I think.
reply
There is "chinko", "chin chin", "chinpo", "chinpoko" and "penisu". The last one would be used more for serious situations (in a hospital for example), whereas the first three are used interchangeably. "chinpoko" sounds more juvenile. "chinko" and "chin chin" are, I strongly believe, interchangeable. Even though if you look at the dictionary it would be written juvenile word for "chin chin". So feel free to use any, for jokes I recommend you "chinpoko".
reply
I guess that this is the fifty shades of the pole.
Hahaha! In the past I did the mistake to confuse kintama 金玉 with kozeni 小銭 for the money haha. In Japanese it is totally different but the meaning of the characters were almost the same meaning for me so inadvertently used it... 金玉ありますかー
reply
I hope you didn’t say that to anyone there. Neither men or women would appreciate it much. If you don’t look Japanese, there would just be the “Are you speaking English,” look. That would be the only way to get away with it.
reply
It was in a dancing class with the teacher. She stared at me so I easily understood I did a mistake, furthermore everyone knew very well so I didn't have any problem.
reply
You’re lucky. In the circles I traveled in, it would have meant a good bashing over the head.
reply
Yeah, but they do that in Italy, only, right?
reply
Oh yeah, I don’t think you could ever live that one down, ever! I think you would never see that woman again.
reply
you had me at "strawberry frappe" <3
reply
I don’t recall seeing McDonald’s during my honeymoon in Italy. Are there McDonald’s outlets in your home country?
reply
yup, we have plenty, especially in the big cities, but they are probably not as successful as a few years ago. We prefer different stuff, and even among the fast food restaurants we go for better options
reply
What are some better options in your opinion?
I think McDonald’s will be ranked first among Singaporeans haha
reply
I like Burger King more, speaking of fast food, mainly because my gf is vegetarian and they have delicious options that McDonald doesn't have! But I'm not a super fan of fast foods in general, 'cause I'm Italian (:
reply
What are the odds? I just had Burger King in Japan today! I think it just arrived at my wife’s hometown
reply
watch you backs, maybe it's no odds and I'm just fastfood-spying you!
