I was inspired to come up with this idea after reading @Jon_Hodl's post (Driving More Users To Stacker News).
I wonder if @k00b has ever thought about selling the ~bitcoin territory. I bet there are tons of people who'd be interested. What if we threw a big event and had an auction? We could do a Dutch auction, where the price starts high (e.g. 100M) and keeps going down until someone bites. Whoever says 'Yee-Haw' first gets the land. It would be a great way to get some marketing to SN.

~bitcoin is the cornerstone of SN I hope he will never ever give control of the territory He has the best interest for his project. Others wont. If you auction that one, you can open a door for bad actors to mess up the site..

But can't this happen with other territories? What bad thing could happen to ~bitcoin territory?

But can't this happen with other territories?
Indeed, but i dont think others are as important or have as much impact.
If you wanted to harm the site, by elevating a lot the fee no one would add new content.

I understand your concern, but I think that if someone does this, not only will they gain nothing, but it's always possible to create other territories. It's not impossible, but I don't see it happening.

in a perfect world.. that would not happen.. But on troll land.. Not so sure
And yes, you can create other territories.. But that one.. is the cornerstone

Never selling.

I know it's your baby, but to say never seems like an exaggeration. Name a price you'd consider selling for. 1 btc ? 21M btc ?
reply
Why not just start "Bitcoin2" for much cheaper?
I understand the theory that eventually when there are 1M users people will hang out in specific territories to cut down on the noise.
But with 1k users, hanging out in main is enough as there is not too much to filter thru....
I think territories are the wrong path for SN funding. I think we should just transition to either (a) set monthly subscription, or (b) set "sats per post" fee that goes to the house.

If you had a goose that laid a golden egg every day, would you sell it?
Now imagine that you had idealogical reasons to protect it and ensure that it was never corrupted or falls into the wrong hands.
You would definitely NOT sell it.

I get the comparison, and there are situations where I'd agree without a second thought. I respect everyone's choices, but in this particular scenario, it's all about the price for me. Wouldn't you sell for 1 BTC? Or even 21 BTC?
reply
I suppose everyone has their price but I think when you build something from the ground up, you're just not that interested in selling it.
reply
I can't imagine why anyone would sell it ever.
reply
In this case it wouldn't be to make a profit but a marketing ploy.

To pull people in to stacker I guess?

not sure is for sale
reply
I don't either, but I think that almost everything has a price, and for the right price, why not?

Dutch auction would not work then

Why doesn't it work?

Why put a max limit? it could be worth more than 100M
reply
100M was just an example, you can start at 21btc. In the dutch auction, the price goes down instead of up. It would make sense to set a minimum, like 21M! 🤠
