It's weird, my wife for sure couldn't care less, other hodlers report something similar. In general society bitcoin is still seen as a crypto bro thing.
I find it a bit odd tho as anyone with even an inclining to preserve their purchasing power and savings should want to hear about the tech that can perform the task, regardless of gender.
Does this just mirror the fact that there are fewer women in tech in general?

Probably because Bitcoin is usually presented as an investment or a get rich schema (lambo buying idiocy, etc.) instead of the powerful emancipating tool that it really is.
Bitcoin and feminism are truly non violent revolutionary movements against the neo-liberalism that is driving the world to the largest inequality that has ever existed. Women need to realize that Bitcoin is such a powerful tool that benefits you more the more marginalized you are.

i do remember seeing Roya's stuff about helping women in Afghanistan using bitcoin , which i thought was very cool.
In the West, as you say, it's most depicted as a get rich quick thing

I think it's all part of the numbness that most people live in. Waking up means more responsibility, more work, more attention, learning new subjects and unlearning the old. I think it doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman, at first it's hard to pay attention to bitcoin because of these aspects, and if you add to this that there are people who live in relatively prosperous places speaking in fiduciary terms, and have never seen or lived through an economic crisis.
and above all our ignorance of how money really works is what prevents us from seeing bitcoin at first, when you begin to study how Fiat works and you begin to see that it is designed to impoverish you, that is when you see Bitcoin and you begin to understand it.
reply
No, is a false impression. I know personally a lot of women in Bitcoin. And we have also many women in Bitcoin developing code wagon. Only that you do not see them active online debating with shitcoiners it doesn't mean do not exist.
reply
it's perhaps a public image thing, it is probably best they stay aware from online debates
reply
don't ignore the fact that many aliases online could be women (IRL)
reply
also true
reply
nah, DC, this is wrong.
Yes yes, there could be nyms and yes women tend to be less combative/make noise online etc, but all the surveys I've seen show ~70:30 in ownership.
@stack_harder's question still stands
reply
online surveys are total crap. Better look around you, IRL, not online.
reply
to some extent, sure, but all of them showing 70:30 or whatever but actually DC knows the truth that it's 50:50?
Nah, just statistically impossible.
reply
For me is simple, there are only 2 categories: bitcoiners and shitcoiners. It doesn't matter if are men or women bitcoiners. If you are in the bitcoiners category, then you are my friend. If not... then HFSP.
reply
it doesn't matter, but it is a fact: we see large such sex differences in many fields of finance/banking/money -- even economics to some extent.
And OP is asking why. So instead of being a bitch about it, maybe offer a hypothesis?
reply
darth has evolved past gender and instead of m / f only sees shitcoiner and bitcoiner
reply
true true.
So, DC, in the future where Bitcoin has won etc, and we're all Bitcoiners... what do you see?
When you came from the future, is quite hard to understand people living in the past :)
Introducing a false sexism dilemma / debate in Bitcoin is useless and lame. Is simple: we are bitcoiners or not. I treat the same a man and a woman when is about Bitcoin.
reply
there's no dilemma and it's not false. WTH are you talking about?
Because women have artificial rights and subsidies garanteed by the states. If you go to poorer countries you will see much more women just because of it.
reply
I think you don't know many women in your life or you just don't meet them. I personally know a few bitcoiners, I can count 9 and 4 of them are women.
reply
that's true, i live in a rural village with a very small social circle. i don't know a single person irl that even basically knows what bitcoin is (apart from some basic MSM stuff)
i was more going by what i see on the web etc and wondering if the stats mirrored the women in tech stats for example
reply
There are less women in finances too. Unfortunately they get places later.
The Bitcoin communities, mainly formed by men aren't exactly welcoming to women.
Plus they are on charge of kids and elder in many cases, and that means less time to learn or worry about anything else.
reply
i sometimes wonder if this is becuase men are usually motivated more to acquire money/resources because that's what ultimately allows him to get women
whereas, generally speaking, a women just has to be hot enough and can get almost any man using looks alone
reply
My wife gets the point and self-custodies her bitcoin.
It seems many women would rather avoid money talk and are in a way programmed by society to be poor in that area.
reply
I also think distribution is skewed and part of the explanation is what you say about women in tech.
This is an interesting topic as there will never be wide adoption until women are into it and start raising kids in the new model.
reply
I imagine it’s a similar ratio to interest in finance & investment?
reply
Not surprising for me as I also don't find many women in my business of logistics.

Women tend to be more interested in people, and men tend to be more interested in things. This is a very broad generalisation.
Bitcoin is a thing, not a people.

I have a sibling I asked this once to which she replied It's like a car I don't need to know how it works just how to use it. Is the way she described how she looks at money she doesn't need to know how it works just how to use it...lost in the matrix so now I just build since we are believe it when I see it minded slowly she's seeing the difference i purchasing power and also the slow drip of other women coming into the space definitely helps also
reply
Women don't generally have much interest in finance or tech so I am not surprised they don't have interest in bitcoin.
Even those that do, probably have no interest in the cultural aspects of Bitcoin and are only interested as a way to save/grow wealth.

You can't conclude with so little data and anecdote to back up. I have met many women in crypto ecosystem and same in nostr.
reply
as I woman I disagree with this. you just need to have the right mindset. btc was influenced by my father and it took me time to realize how powerful it is. but I do now, that's the important thing
I have built my thoughts and ideals with what I think has been a good mindset, bitcoin is not an exception
reply
I don't know the reason...it could be because women have others task / responsibilities.
In most of the BTC events that I've attend to, as meetups or Conferences, a big majority is males.
The audience from my Youtube Channel is 99,6% males.

Archetypes
Hunter / Gather
Production / Distribution
It's not a new phenomenon and certainly not unique to Bitcoin
One side is adept at things and abstract ideas, the other is adept with people
That's why the latter be more important to the mass adoption era, because they're the distribution and the "why" that ultimately justifies our "what"

It's definitely more of a masculine type thing overall. It's normal for women to be less concerned with things like money in general. Women are more so feelings, intuitive, in their bodies. Men are more in their heads, intellectual. Obviously there is a spectrum in how we all show up. But in general terms it's not a feminine thing. Just like computer programming is also generally a more masculine activity. It all seems natural to me. Of course in upside down world, we are told to forget what makes us unique in these ways, but it's normal for the 2 genders to fill different rolls. Money, finance, technology, mechanical things, these are more masculine for sure.

Ya I don’t know a lot of women just don’t seem to care about bitcoin these days
