I don't agree with the idea that Taiwan belongs under "Chinese sovereignty", but Taiwanese sovereignty is not worth ending the world over. That has to be the framing whenever the US is sticking its nose into other nuclear powers' business.
China has sufficient military to defend itself and they know America has sufficient military to defend itself. All this posturing at though they're going to fight each other is enormously wasteful.
What the Taiwanese could do is mine and wire everything the Chinese are trying to take and then tell them if they make one move in their direction everything go BOOM!
Taiwan has been a battleground for all sorts of people; Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese for a long time.
I think the Chinese think they have a mandate from the gods to take the whole world as theirs, much like some other people we know, but who must remain unnamed. Their name as written by them means the Middle Kingdom, that is, the kingdom between heaven and earth. Therefore, they are, or should be, the rulers of the planet. Now where have I heard that before? Hmmmmm … WEF?!?!
The Taiwanese people I have met are really friendly and easy going, and the Kuomintang (Chinese exiles from the mainland) are not so easygoing or friendly.
