Dune is great and beautiful, but do you really think it's a better sci-fi movie than The Matrix?
I like it for its fidelity to the novel. All three of them tried to do justice to the novel but it was just too dense to go from written medium to film medium.
reply
Yeah, I'm really enjoying the movies so far. I think they're only planning on making one more, unfortunately.
reply
That can’t be helped. If they thought that they could make money on more, they probably would make them. As you can see from post: #730664 There are a lot more films they could make for Dune.
reply
Yes the matrix is fantastic but Dune’s lore about the galactic order is great. The matrix is just about earth and AI while Dune is the whole galaxy
reply
To the extent we can make comparisons across media, I think the Dune books are much better science fiction than The Matrix, but I don't think the movies are better sci-fi.
reply
The visuals of the Dune movies are fantastic!! The matrix has better action scenes and the plot and writing are very philosophical but I just think the matrix universe is very limited. But focusing on just the movie The Matrix was really wild in 1999
reply
I think that the Matrix was made as a one-off movie, originally. I don’t think they knew how it would be received! Reeves even took just a cut of the action, thinking the film would not really be a big hit. Therefore, the universe is much more underdeveloped than that of Dune. There is one more that people probably do not see: The Animatrix. It is about ten shorts of the Matrix universe that fill in the story line; like how the kid originally shows up, what happened to the sky, and why there was the war between humans and machines.

I think trying to compare across media is impossible. Films cover different aspects of a story than books do. Then, books can go into much more detail and have much more complicated and complex story lines. Films can only show what actions are readily available to the viewer. I have never been satisfied by a film from a book that I had read before seeing the film. I have been satisfied by films that I have seen first and afterward read the book. For instance, I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey before reading Clarke’s book. Had I read the book first, the movie wouldn’t have been so mind blowing.
reply
I wouldn’t say that the recent Dune movies were were better than the Matrix. To this day, I have never seen a book for Matrix to compare the books. I like to compare the books as well as movies. If the Dune movies could go into the detail and complexity that is in the books, they would be far better than Matrix, but, alas, I don’t think it could ever be done.
reply
This is a fantastic point. Judging just on movie metric then yea The Matrix is better than Dune one. It’s much more complete
reply
Yes, when just comparing movies, I think Matrix is much more complete. But, I know much more about the Dune universe than I do the Matrix universe and that colors what I see in the movies.
reply
That would have to be done in a streaming series. Otherwise, there's just way too much detail.
reply
I could see them doing the Dune series for 10 to 15 years if they were to use all of the books in the Dune universe. The universe is huge: #730664 There would be no end to it. Of course, that would make it more interesting, too.

The Dune series hits HBO max tonight
reply
Which Dune series is that? Is it the one from the Sci-Fi channel or the new movies?
reply
Brand new! Might have to get max to watch

Just watched the trailer! Where does this fit in on the series? Does it come before or after the original Dune novel?

3 days until HBO's Dune: Prophecy airs! This show focuses on the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and the beginning of their breeding program. I'll be reviewing each episode as they come out. Fingers crossed that there are at least a few things to like about the show, I'm actually optimistic! Judging by the look of things, it seems the show mostly skips over the era depicted in KJA and Brian Herbert’s Sisterhood of Dune trilogy. So, what we're actually getting appears to be entirely new material based on Frank Herbert’s work, while incorporating some characters created by his son. We'll see soon.
OK, it looks a little bit like it comes from Sisterhood of Dune but it may come from earlier in the timeline. There are the rumblings of the start of the Bene Gesserit in the three earlier books. They were part of the original fight against the machines and come into play during and after the Butlerian Crusade.
I'm curious to hear how it is.

It looks like they took your advice and ran with it. I just wonder how it will go over. Does it have fidelity with he original books, the derivative books or is it completely new?
reply
I have no clue

I hope those watching it will keep us up-to-date! They can also tell us what they think of it.
